This book tells the story of the 1997 flood of the Red River of the North from the South Dakota border to Winnipeg, Canada, with photos taken by over fifty North American amateur photographers, international photojournalists such as Mary Ellen Mark, artists, and staff newspaper and magazine photographers from across the continent. About the Author

Laurel Reuter is founding director of the North Dakota Museum of Art. Her most recent publications include Whole Cloth with co-author Mildred Constantine, published by The Monacelli Press in 1997. She has curated over a hundred exhibitions of contemporary art. She lectures widely, including most recently at the National Musuem in Jakarta, Indonesia in December 1997 and at the Getty Conservation Institute in March 1998. Her work at the North Dakota Museum of Art since the flood has been featured twice on CBS News' "Sunday Morning" and in the Arts and Leisure section of the New York Times. Reuter was born and raised in North Dakota on the Devils Lake Sioux Reservation (now known as the Spirit Lake Sioux Reservation).

Eric Hylden has been a staff photographer at the Grand Forks Herald since 1986. He was a visiting photographer at the Knight Ridder Bureau in Washington, D.C. in 1995. Hylden was nominated for LIFE Magazine's "Eisie" award in 1998 and was chosen Photographer of the Year by the Dakota Press Photographers Association in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, and 1996. He was part of the Grand Forks Herald staff which won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1998 for coverage of the Flood of 1997. He was also part of the Herald photo staff which was runner-up for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News.
