Editorial Reviews

UNDERBELLY uses the framework of the war waging within the underworld, and the war between the underworld and the Purana Task Force, to explore a complex array of individual stories and relationships some touching, some incredible, all breathtaking. It is a series that examines the kaleidoscopic nature of loyalty, love, revenge and pride when the normal and identifiable emotions of human attachment are moved from the context of social decency to social indecency. Based on actual events, this explicit, gripping and violent trilogy exposes the shocking true story of the crime wave that rocked Australia from the 1970s until the early 2000s. Includes three, 13-episode series of Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities , The Golden Mile and War On The Streets .

The fascinating television import "Underbelly" finally gets a U.S. distribution, and it's about time! I first became aware of "Underbelly" when I read that it was Australia's answer to "The Sopranos." Since that first comparison, I've heard the same point made countless times. To be frank, other than the fact that they are two adult series set in the criminal underworld, I don't think that generalized statement is very apt or has much bearing on whether or not you'll enjoy this show. If you are expecting a rich "Sopranos" type narrative and continuing storyline, this isn't quite going to fulfill your expectations. But that doesn't make it any less intriguing. The general tone of "Underbelly" is a bit more lurid. The show itself has much more of a docudrama feel, recreating significant true events in Australia's criminal history complete with plenty of gratuitous nudity and violence. With edgy camera work, quick cut editing, and a propulsive soundtrack--this is a show that aims at getting in your face. And for the most part, it succeeds. One of my favorite elements of the show is that each season is its own unique entity with new characters and charting a new story. Heck, it's become somewhat of a franchise with four complete 13 episode seasons and a series of TV movies.

As with any program with many tales to tell, some are definitely more effective than others. While I may not personally think that every season of "Underbelly" merits a five star rating, I think that in scope and ambition--this set is a must see proposition and I'll gladly give it the highest rating for that reason. "Underbelly: The Trilogy" does present the first three seasons complete and uncut. Each season is, as I said, thirteen episodes with each program approximately 50 minutes in length.

5.0 out of 5 stars This freakin rocks! Fair Dinkum mates. February 22, 2012

Americans rejoice, if you want down & dirty criminal entertainment these 3 seasons of various Australian crime waves kick... you know what! There is none of the navel-gazing-Mafia-Don-on-a-couch-with-a-shrink that ruined The Sopranos for me here. All 39 episodes were a heckuva lotta fun to watch. The Aussie flavor gives it a nice spin, but the appeal is universal. If you like stories about bad guys, drug dealers, good cops, bad cops & innocent people caught in their cross hairs you won't go wrong here. Thank whoever for making it available on our DVD players in "The States".

Excellent movies, they should not be compare to the Soprano, which had the same character for each season. Each season had new storyline, new characters role but overall a good gangster series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Killer of a Show November 9, 2013
Verified Purchase
This is one of my all time favorite TV shows. One reason is because I lived and worked in Carlton when all the Moran and Williams activities were going on. It made life quite interesting for me at lunch and dinner time on Lygon street.

The three series were great. My favorite was the first one and my least favorite was the Sydney based one. Obviously this comes from a Melbournian bias.. LOL

A few things about the dvds themselves.
There is no closed captioning or language options. So if you do not understand some Aussie slang, etc you will never pick up on it. Also there are no scene selection capabilities.

These are really good shows. I hope they do something on Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read now that he as passed on.
The flick "Chopper" was good but an Underbelly version could be great.

1.0 out of 5 stars No captioning December 11, 2013

I expected this to be captioned, as I am deaf. Big disappointment, I gave the set to one of my sons who likes crime DVDs and can hear. I ask Amazon to require sellers to post back side pictures of package to show what type of sound and captioning are available so as not to missrepresent quality of products..
