TOP SECRET BABIES: Unwrap the mystery!

INSTANT DADDY...

Police officer Cade Maconahey was a loner -- until the day his baby son arrived on the doorstep. Suddenly the man who faced the toughest criminals without flinching was wrapped around his son's tiny fingers. Cade had never thought he'd have a family. Now he was a father....

OR WAS HE?

Two attempts on her life hadn't stopped Joanna Edwards's frantic search for her missing baby. The trail led to Cade's door, where she found a fierce protector -- and a baby whose age exactly matched her child's. Joanna didn't know which was more dangerous -- the trap tightening around her, or falling for the man who thought her baby was his own...

Harlequin Intrigue #609, April 2001.

More About the Author

I've been married to my high school sweetheart since those good old rock and roll days when Elvis was The King and The Beatles were galloping over the horizon.

We live on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula; the Olympic mountains range is the eye candy out my office window. My adopted cat, Spooky, is always curled up near me as I create my stories these days.

My career as a writer started in junior high school in the form of poetic rhymes and continued to my senior year, when I contemplated writing a book, dreaming up characters disturbingly reminiscent of my classmates. But other than a few notes, the book never left the planning stage. I had a discouraging experience in a creative writing course I was taking at the time and being a sensitive teenage girl. . . I didn't attempt writing stories again for twenty years.

I restarted my writing career by taking a community college writing 101 course. The teacher was wonderfully encouraging and luckily for me, I met my first critique group in that class. At the time, I was writing Mysteries and the others in my new critique group were all writing Romance. Since I've always been a romantic at heart, I ended up adding romance to my mysteries. Lots of romance.

I call my stories Sexy Whodunits.

Or as one of the characters in my new mystery series would say, "Sex and Murder!"

4.0 out of 5 stars Undercover Baby, April 9, 2001
This review is from: Undercover Baby (A Walk Down the Aisle: Wedding Celebration #8) (Harlequin Intrigue Series #609) (Mass Market Paperback)
This month's Top Secret Baby comes from Adrianne Lee in "Undercover Baby." Months after her baby died at birth, Joanna Edwards learns that her child is alive. Her hunt for the baby's midwife, who disappeared after the birth, leads her to Cade Maconahey, the woman's ex-husband. Cade has enough on his hands with the baby his ex-wife left with him, the child he never knew he had. Can he help Joanna find hers?

Lee puts an entirely different twist on the usual secret child plot that makes this a cut above the rest. I enjoyed the way she turned this cliché on its head and made her story one of a kind. I've never seen an author do what Lee does here and I liked it a lot. (That doesn't mean I want to see it repeated a hundred times by other authors, thank you.) The Top Secret Babies miniseries has featured better than normal secret child stories, but what they've also had in common was some very fast-paced, gripping stories. "Undercover Baby" is no exception. Like Lee's best work, this is a true pageturner, packed with emotion and suspense. The pace is blistering, never letting up for a moment and Joanna's search will grab reader's hearts. Though there's not much in the way of character growth and Joanna and Cade are pretty thinly developed, they are likable and easy to root for.

There are a lot of books that claim to be romantic suspense, and while most of them put their characters in dangerous situations , few of them really keep me on the edge of my seat, gripping the book tightly and anxiously turning pages. This is one. Like her last book, "Little Boy Lost," "Undercover Baby" has a true sense of suspense. Lee is also one of the few authors able to write a reliably good mystery, and here she has penned another one. She has a good grasp of her suspects, knows how to drop clues, and offers a surprising and satisfying resolution.

"Undercover Baby" is an excellent romance told in Lee's singular style, with the perfect balance of suspense and mystery. If all secret child books were as good as this and the last few Top Secret Babies have been, I might be more excited about them. Don't miss this one.

Adrianne Lee has written a spell binding Intrigue. A good book--both romantic and suspenseful, both parts equally weighted. I fell in love with the hero, who handles a baby with élan and a little duck tape:-), and a gun, too. The love story was both romantic and sensual with a shower scene that will be remembered! The suspense was equally compelling. It wasn't till the end of the book, that I even got an inkling who the villain was--there were so many possibilities. Highly recommend this one!

And Not Boring.

We have Joanna Edwards looking for her baby daughter who was stolen from her [by who?]
Cade Maconahey - whose ex-wife, Nancy Wheeler, dropped his unknown son on him and took off [just disappeared] He is an undercover vice cop and determined to protect his son.
Ted Wheeler - Nancy's brother and a lawyer. Does he know more than he is telling Cade.
Ah, Shane Addison - A womanizer, and married with two daughters, and asperations to become the next govenor - He must maintain a clean reputation. Did he deliberately follow Joanna to Paris?
Luna Casili - Joanna's friend since they were thirteen until ---- she runs the art Galleria and has some of Joanna's art work on display.
Kendall Addison - the wronged wife - how determined was she to help put her husband in the governor's office?
Mel Reagan - never quite figured out who or what he was.
Bob Massey - he wanted to marry Joanna and was furious when she broke off their engagement. Would he keep her from finding her baby?

This cast of characters filled out a pretty neat story - ah but I had forgotten the minor role that Officer O'Brien had in trying to track down Joanna.
Quite a hotbed of intrigue - My suspicions proved correct but I try not to anticipate the villian although I am guilty of peeking near the last pages [I am impatient] I do think that Joanna was allowed too easy a suspicion about her baby without it being tied in better.

Definitely Recommend --m -- darn nice group of stories - makes excellent reading.
