Editorial Reviews

Ace intelligence operative Lt. Jazen Parker parachutes into Tressel, a planet that resembles Earth in its Paleozoic era, on a mission to bring down the local politicos. He quickly realizes he's been handed a near-impossible task. Tressel is a politically quarantined nightmare world with a culture confined to iron-rivet technology and a ruling regime a bit to the right of Heinrich Himmler. Jazen's inclined to abandon this particular hellhole to its ways - that is, until he uncovers a plot afoot that will throw a 500-planet alliance into the death-throes of anarchy.

So the local Nazis must go. Unfortunately, all Jazen's got to work with is a handful of rust-bucket tanks, a retread rebellion, and two strong, beautiful women who love him but think he's tilting at windmills and is about to get himself killed. What they don't know is that, once committed, Jazen Parker is the best there is when it comes to getting a dirty job done on the ground. It's the local bullies who are about to be taught a lesson in losing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written space yarn July 13, 2011
By Money
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was impressed with the quality of the writing in this book. The basic plotline is a space military man Jazen, retired and working in a saloon, being called back into service to rescue an old flame (and military colleague, Kit) who's lost and unheard from, on another planet. He's motivated by rescuing her, as well as some old fashioned manipulation on the part of a man who knows more about his history, to gain info on his own past. This is part of a larger series, so in truth I was a little lost with all of the references to alien races and planets, long ended space wars, etc. I believe that the previous books in the series would fill me in more on all of this, but in any case, the descriptive language of the various alien life forms the protagonist encounters is impressive. I was often transported to the alien worlds myself, thanks to all the great detail. And it isn't bogged down by this- the detail is delivered succinctly as the story moves quickly.

The author is capable of combining elements of classic sci-fi movies like Aliens or Starship Troopers, but add both incredibly descriptive elements with the added bonus of first person thoughts and observations. I liked the book quite a bit, and recommend it to anyone that enjoys this genre. I would recommend too, however, that someone start at the beginning of the series. It was (for me, a certified bonehead) a bit overwhelming early on to gather all the differences between the alien races and their back history with each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine SF July 12, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Book 2 of the Orphan's Legacy series, UNDERCURRENTS opens two years after the first OVERKILL. Jazen Parker, retired spy, runs a bar and is more or less blackmailed back into service. A mission to the world of Tressel has gone bad, communication with the insertion team cut off. Their misiion was to find out what the unholy alliance between the Tressens and the Yavets was all about. Leading that two man team was Kit Born, Jazen's former partner, former lover, and he intended to rescue her. Not what the old man wanted though.

jazen and his partner were dropped in from low orbit with a pod of equipment and things went bad from the start. The HALO drop, High Altitude. Low Orbit, killed Jazen's partner, nearly killed him, and lost half his equipment from the pod, including communications, before he landed miles off tasrget from the Iridian pick-up boat.

And then things really got bad.

A book full of action piled on action as Jazen goes about trying to accomplish his mission and the old man's, while a Yevet officer pursued him.

This is a fine series so far. I haven't read the five Jason Wander novels that precede it, something I need to rectify.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page Turning Spy and Military Sci-Fi Thriller August 9, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Undercurrents is the second book of the Orphan Legacy series, which takes place after the Jason Wander series. It contains 90 chapters, averaging 3 pages each, and most of those chapters end with cliff hangers. But even while you race from one chapter to another, you begin to care about both the good guys and even a few of the bad guys. After a while, you find that the spy mission is important because while you may like some of the bad guys, the governments they serve are really nasty and you desperately hope the good guys can stop them.

Jazen is recruited to parachute onto the hostile planet Trestl to find out why the previous spy team went silent and to find out what nefarious spies from Yavet are secretly doing there. He also has to rescue another spy being held captive by the Yavi. And to foil the Yavi plot which will start an interplanetary war if it succeeds.

Our hero escapes from scores of dangers. But a few times, he does so only because of incredible coincidences or incredible luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the Orphan adventure.
This is a pretty fast read with some interesting twists and lots of action. Not quite as strong as the original Orphan books but worth the time.
