Wishing Chair's "Underdog" is produced by Mark Hallman who did such a good job with One Thing Right by Matt the Electrician. Hallman was in the 70s Carole King backup band Navarro whose two LPs still spin on my turntable. "Sue Monday" shines as a folk ballad with Miriam Davidson's banjo giving the lovely melody character, "So I took to murder then, stealing horses robbing men, burned wagons, bending rails, We were always hungry." "Outlaw Wedding" is a gay marriage song, celebrating Kiya Heartwood & Miriam Davidson's union, "She does her best for me, Nine years steady, We're a family." "Fieldtown Road Construction" has a lovely melody and strong harmony vocals, "Are we standing tall beneath these steel grey skies? Splinters of sunlight cut the tears from our eyes." "Sidewalks" softly traces tender feelings with Davidson's accordion lending character, "Flesh & blood, mud & bone, I just want to walk you home." "Highway Lullaby" sets the toe tapping, "Winfield Kansas a quilt of stars, Can't see the road for the snow or another car." Songwriter Kiya Heartwood's melodies are original and quite stunningly beautiful as on the slow charmer "Be," "Are you afraid to be the woman you are meant to be? Can you show me?" "Oz" pulses with a sweet energy and Davidson's banjo again giving subtle character, "We keep looking for a man behind the curtain; No one's standing there, just you & me." The set concludes with the lovely string "Adajio." "Underdog" is a very strong folk set with strong songwriting, performance and production. Enjoy!
