2.0 out of 5 stars WONDER BREAD
I purchased this CD based on the recommendation of the previous reviewer and the short snipits provided by Amazon. After two listens this one went into the garbage bin. While this artist has talent, the banal repetitive vocals and musical arrangements remind me of elevator music. Lyrically this woman has something to say and would benefit from an innovative producer...

I remember the first time I heard Jen Foster. I works nights at a bar where music is being played constantly and since I have no control over what is being played, I have learned to tune the music out...until... Jen Foster took the stage and then proceeded to take my breath away! I found myself completely in the weeds that evening and unable to focus on my job. The first thing that caught my attention was her unique voice and style and once the lyrics registered, she gained my complete respect. I have followed her career from that moment on. Upon hearing this new CD "The Underdogs", my breath, once again, escaped me. This CD is not only musical entertainment - it is Jen - raw and exposed. It is a compilation of life experiences that we can all relate to in some way. This CD is filled with songs that will take you from laughter to tears and all places in between. Every song has its own individuality and purpose which commands your attention from each songs beginning. Once you hit play...you won't want to hit stop! The more you listen to it the more meaning it begins to take on.! I promise - you will NOT want to take it out of your stereo!!!!This purchase is an investment in the human spirit and you will NOT be disappointed!!!! It is a display of her growth in all areas of her work over the years and is most definitely her best CD yet!!!! I have introduced it to many and they have all made the purchase and are as impressed as I am!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An "Underdog"??? I don't think so!, February 9, 2006

"A black and white picture, taken by a stranger, out in the streets of New Orleans..." so she begins "Taking Bob Dylan," the tale of a painful parting. As every good songwriter does, Jen Foster convinces you that that the photo and the wine bottle and the stolen blanket are yours. Foster's rousing background vocals are a blast to parrot as they lead you to the conclusion that she is (and you are) going to be just fine... especially when she finally, boldly and sarcastically asks, "tell me, how does it feel?"

Despite the heavy topics, Foster manages to give us something different: a serious album that, on the whole, is uplifting AND provocative.

While "Taking Bob Dylan" is THE anthem for the whole moving out ordeal, Jen Foster's singing and songwriting talents are evident throughout this album. "Without Michaelangelo" is a clever tribute to "greats" that she manages to make both playful and profound! Speaking of profound, "Amen" showscases the depth of Jen's writing and the strength of her vocals. And just when you think you know her music, you get "Sun in Seattle" which is reminiscent of something, I'm not sure what, but something well before her time... perhaps Simon and Garfunkel's somber stuff? I don't know, but in any event, veeeery cool.

The bottom line is this: if you're into cool, thoughtful lyrics and solid vocals, get this cd... then do whatever you can to catch the next Jen Foster show! Bravo to Jen Foster (and to famed producer Jeff Trott).

From the opening line "won't you please tell me where your going I'm on edge with this uncertainty" you begin the lyrical journey of "The Underdogs," both lyrically and musically this CD soars.

i can't remember the last time i bought a CD i could leave in my player for more then just a couple of songs. not only should you buy this CD, but catch a live show, you won't be dissapointed.

I have SIRIUS and heard Jen Foster on CoffeeHouse, and was so HAPPY!! Jen deserves the spotlight and I am glad to see her there! A Texas native, Jen does everything BIG and with intensity...I love it!

I have spent most of my life listening to "underdogs" who soon became sensational SUPERSTARS in music. From U2 to Alanis...Sheryl Crow to Keith Urban, I definitely heard them before everyone was saying they were cool and buying their music.

Jen Foster is one of those pop musicians doing something completely unique. I bet in a year or so you will be saying, "I was listening to her music long before everyone started buying it!"

Jen has an energy to her most recent CD The Underdogs that permeates, infuses and dares to dream aloud. I have seen her live, and found myself singing her songs out the door and into the next week.

If you choose to buy Jen Foster's The Underdogs, remember, you have never heard this before...and it will be a NEW experience. In a pop world of "formula" songs and manicured looks, Jen is a breath of honesty. She has worked hard and has earned this success!!

Like Jen, dare to dream aloud! Enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cd I've heard in AGES, February 23, 2006

(...) Here is an artist who lays her heart on her sleeve - who takes risks in her life and her music. Bigger risks than any artist i can think of with that kind of mainstream capability. An openly gay artist who won a Gospel Award? Michelle would be Shocked! Amazing lyricist and personality, as well. And Jeff Trott? His production is tasteful, impeccable. All of the major songwriting awards Jen has won speak for themselves. She's as edgy and cool as Michelle Shocked, but crafts melodies and writes lyrics like a star.

The first song I ever heard Jen Foster sing she sang to me. Actually it was from her Everybody's girl CD... but I felt it was to me.. for me. This CD is no different. The songs she sings have a universal appeal... they get right to the heart of the matter and you are bound to recognize yourself in them. I've been lucky enough to hear the songs from this album not only from my cd player, but live as well. The musicis as authentic as Jen seems to be. She is the kind of person, after you listen to her music.. and then share an evening listening to her perform, that makes you say... I WANT TO KNOW THIS PERSON... and you feel like she knows something about YOU. Great artist do that to people. She is a gay woman.. but her music is about us all. I can PROMISE that if you hear this cd once.. you will be HOOKED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album "The Underdogs", February 26, 2006
This review is from: The Underdogs (Audio CD)
I was first introduced to "Jen Foster" about a year ago, through a very special person in my life Chalet "Chapel", and just listening to the beat at first throughout the album you get so many vibes from relaxing, intense, sad, and then you bring the lyrics into it, and you appreciate the songs that are on the album, and a lot of people can relate to all of it, because in life we all have common attributes, and we all have gone through something tragic, to be able to relate through Jen's music brings a whole new perspective, as someone who has felt that happiness, sadness, and be able to be free spirited because there is someone out there who knows what we all have come across over the years, because she has been there, and has the ability to share it through song.

I am a very eclectic individual and although I find myself into mainstream music, and into all the prominent artists of the century, and as well as all the icons of the past, I have to say the first time I had the pleasure to see Jen Live in Atlanta, GA at a listening party, I was mesmerized by her vocals, and energy she puts out through her music, there is always a difference when you listen to a CD, but once you have seen someone live, it brings you to a whole new level. I was very impressed with her performance not once during her show, was I distracted, bored, or found myself thinking about other things, she had me from her first song, till the encore, and just being able to feel that positive atmosphere she radiates and her voice wow, I can only explain it to me as an Angelic sound, so peaceful, and pure. Each time I have seen her live shows, they get better and better each time, and watching the audience and being able to feel all good vibes, and after speaking with writers from local papers there to do a interview and write a piece on her performance I get all positive responses. I need not mention the comments from the fans, because when people drive from states afar, need I say more?

In essence I see Jen Foster taking mainstream head on, with all the recognition she has received, and all the awards she and her songs have taken, I believe that the individual she is, and her beautiful persona, and as she captivates everyone she comes across, with her amazing talents, style, and the awesome shows she performs. Way to go Jen!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lyrics mixed with awesome music!, March 9, 2006
This review is from: The Underdogs (Audio CD)
This album shows what a great musician can create when they put great words with music. Jen has a unique way of putting just the right words together with the right melody. She is able to remind us to be thankful for the little things in life that are important with the song "AMEN" and I'm sure everyone at some point in their life has felt like an "UNDERDOG". It's nice to listen to the song and be reminded that your not the only one who has had to go through tough situations cause you're different than what is accepted as normal.

People listen to music because it either has a good beat or the lyrics find a way to speak to our hearts. Jen proves that she can do both with this album!!!!!

I'm looking forward to listening to her music live as soon as I can get to a concert!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Music !!!!!, March 23, 2008
This review is from: The Underdogs (Audio CD)
From beginning to end, this CD is full of honest, captivating, soul feeding music. Like Jen Foster's previous projects, "The Underdogs" defies labels and categories and seems to carve out a genre all its own - touching a unique place in each individual that hears it. If you are a fan of artists like the Indigo Girls and Sheryl Crow - do not miss Jen Foster - she is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars OH MY!, May 12, 2007
This review is from: The Underdogs (Audio CD)
Jen foster is amazing! She uses her beautiful voice and "hook"y melodies to draw you in & then with her simple, soulful & honest lyrics she reaches in to find that comon ground in all of us, to where if in her story telling you haven't quite been there yourself you will feel empathy for those who have.... and in her intimate honnesty, if you have been there you will feel you're not alone....

Jen Foster has managed to do what the great masters of any art have done... bravely & honestly look at herself... willing to see the ugly, the beautiful and what is beautiful in that ugliness..... and then put it out for all the world to see....

Bravo & Amen!
