5.0 out of 5 stars It Changes your view on life!, January 4, 2004

This review is from: Underground to Canada (Paperback)
This book is awesome! It makes you think of all the things you take for granted and hard it must have been to be owned.
The main character Julilly goes through some much hardship and pain trying to get to Canada to be free, but in the end it was all worth it. The book also tells about how some people died trying to get to the land of the free, Canada.
No matter what age you should read this book, you wont regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An overall good book, May 13, 1999

This review is from: Underground to Canada (Hardcover)
I had to read this book for a project at school and all I could think was "oh great, another dumb book to read", but after all, it was a great book. It really helps you understand about how the life of a slave was in the early 1800's. The two main characters (Julily and Liza) never give up their hope on their trip to Canada. Julily's Mammy Sally is a very strong character in this book about the Underground Railroad. She does age a bit when Julily finally finds her at the end of the book in "the free land", Canada, but Julily still loves her just as much as she did when she left her. This book should make Canadians feel proud of the free country that we live in. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must" Read, April 29, 2000

This book is full of excitement, thrill and just pure attention-grabbing. I was ecstatic when I found out that my seventh grade class would be reading this book for novel study. I read this book in fifth grade and I loved it then and still do now. Barbara Smucker's way of combining true history into an action-packed novel is magnificent. Overall, this book is tremendous and I reccomend it to all ages.

"Underground to Canada" by Barbra Smucker is a novel about slaves in the United States
of America during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The story follows two slaves on
their journey to find liberation from slavery via the "Underground Railway" to Canada. Unaware
of what Canada might really hold for them, they persisted based only on the hope that what they
had been told about Canada would be true, to fulfill their dream or freedom.
This would be a good book for students around the Grade 6 level. For older students,
however, this book did not seem to fully describe the geniuine difficulty that such an epic journey
would have entailed. Many of the obstacles the escaping slaves encountered seemed to be
resolved quickly, before any true climax was able to be established. The book did allow for some
very in-depth, and enriching class conversations, but only when the ideas were taken outside of
the novel and applied to current events. Although there is much critisim in our perspective, this
novel could be read to understand the vicious aspect of slavery and the history behind it all,
through the rich class discussions it evoked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underground To Canada, January 16, 2000
This review is from: Underground to Canada (Hardcover)
This book meant nothing to me until I had to read it for an English Essay. I read it and started to enjoy it. It's about two Slave Girls Julilly and Liza. They went to Canada with two friends Laster & Adam but they got captured so it was up to Julilly to support the Crippled Liza as she had previously tried to escape but got caught and wipped 25 times. This book should inspire people about the length these slaves go through to escape to freedom.
