Book Description

October 15, 2007
UNDERGROUND He's created a life for himself in Deptford while waiting for the past three years for the word from the Big Man that they are ready for the job. His allies are Victor and Timmy. But they got Timmy. Was it the other side, a mob, the police… or another group entirely? He doesn't know. He only knows that his cover is blown. Escaping by train to Brighton, he meets Rachel. They spend time together. It's not supposed to happen, but he begins to care. And this is where the real trouble starts. Because once he returns to Deptford, he finds that allegiances are not what they seem…and his life once lived underground has shifted dangerously into the open.

COLLECTED STORIES Here are five very diverse stories from "the Godfather of British noir." Gary Lovisi, the editor of Hardboiled magazine, claims that "Russell James is a writer every American hard-boiled fan should be reading." The Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction says: "Russell James shines his torch into the crevices of the British underworld and turns what crawls out into some of the best crime fiction being written today." Four of these stories have appeared in British magazines, but none have appeared before in the U.S. And the final and longest story, "How Could it Last It?," is published here for the first time.

"An unholy cross between Len Deighton and American noir novelist David Goodis." --Jon Williams, The Face

About the Author

Russell James is a British crime writer known for his hard-hitting, low-life thrillers, mainly set in south east London. He has written ten crime novels plus a number of short stories and writes a regular column for the magazine Crime Time. In 2001 he was elected Chairman of the Crime Writers Association. Named by the Times as "surely the best of Britain's darker crime writers", Russell James is a truly noir crime writer. There are no detectives in his books, and when the police do appear it is on the sidelines. James concentrates on the criminals, their victims and the people caught up in what's going on.

More About the Author

Russell is a much-praised British writer, ex-Chairman of the Crime Writers Association, and author of twelve novels, crime and historical. Recent novels include 'The Maud Allan Affair', culminating in the shocking Old Bailey trial of 1919, and 'Requiem for a Daughter', set in the build-up to the 2012 London Olympics. Most of his hard-hitting, low-life thrillers are set in south east London and, unusually, they feature no detectives; when the police do appear it is on the sidelines.
He has also published four illustrated biographical encyclopaedias: Great British Fictional Detectives and its companion work, Great British Fictional Villains, followed by The Pocket Guide to Victorian Writers & Poets and its companion, The Pocket Guide to Victorian Artists & Their Models, published in spring 2011.

His books include:
POCKET GUIDE TO VICTORIAN ARTISTS & THEIR MODELS
POCKET GUIDE TO VICTORIAN WRITERS & POETS
GREAT BRITISH FICTIONAL VILLAINS
GREAT BRITISH FICTIONAL DETECTIVES
REQUIEM FOR A DAUGHTER
THE MAUD ALLAN AFFAIR

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of six crime noir stories, May 5, 2008
This review is from: Underground / Collected Stories (Paperback)
Three years spent in the underground making a life for himself, waiting for the big man to give him the word. His cover gets blown, his partner is dead, and just when he doesn't need to, he meets a girl. "Underground and Collected Stories" is a collection of six crime noir stories with the story "Underground" being the main course in this literary feast. Russel James' nameless protagonist has his life tossed out into the open with dangerous consequences. In "Collected Stories" James (a.k.a. 'the godfather of British Noir') plays out five more diverse stories for increased worthwhile value to the reader, and is the writer every American hard boiled fan should be reading. The highest recommendation for Noir fans and for mystery and suspense library shelves everywhere.
