5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for teens I've ever read!
Working as a health and sexuality educator in Miami, as well as being a mother of three, this book delivers the information teens really want to know in a way that is understandable and interesting to them. Another big plus is that this book has the most illustrations of any other book on the subject, which holds my students and teens attention as well. I always...

3.0 out of 5 stars Be careful when handing this book to young teens
Though this book is VERY informative, I hesitate to encourage people to hand it over to their teen, especially teens younger than 15. The book is much a "how to" book. How to have sex, what an organism feels like, and how to put on a condom. Yes, it talks about pregnancy, abortion and STD's but it lacks moral decision making. This is where the parent steps in, to read...

Working as a health and sexuality educator in Miami, as well as being a mother of three, this book delivers the information teens really want to know in a way that is understandable and interesting to them. Another big plus is that this book has the most illustrations of any other book on the subject, which holds my students and teens attention as well. I always recommend this book to the staff personnel, teachers, parents and students I meet at the health facilities and schools I visit. This truly is an invaluable handbook!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Recommend This Book to My Clients, January 14, 2001
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
Working in an facility that serves youth between the ages of 11 - 19, one of their greatest needs is for information about their bodies, sexuality and how to protect themselves in many different types of situations. Having looked at and read most, if not all of what is out there, this book is perfect for young people and their parents.

We have been very successful in providing this book to young people of diverse populations and backgrounds - it seems to be making a difference - and the teens love it. I recommend this book highly for young people, parents and teachers - so much so, I took the time to write this recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Honest and Made For Real Human Beings, January 17, 2001
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
Working within a private practice, I constantly find young people and parents who are looking for understandable answers to their questions about sex, responsibility and growing up in a healthy way. I have personally read over a dozen books on this topic, but this is the one we have in our waiting room and that we recommend to our youth and parents.

This book provides accurate, honest, understandable and realistic information to those who need it most. Our teens love it, and parents find it to be a Godsend. If there is one book each family should have it's this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Teen Should Have This Book!, January 10, 2001
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
I visited a cool web site that had this book recommended and bought it and it is the best book that I own. It answers all of my questions, it's honest, fair, easy to understand and lots of pictures. My friends and I look at it and use it all the time now. It helps me with my relationships too! I love this book and think every teenager should have a copy - so does my Mom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource For Teens, May 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
I purchased this book about two years ago for my daughter, who was 14 at the time, because I knew that although she had learned the basics of sex, she still had questions that she wasn't comfortable discussing with me.

After the book arrived, I read it and wished it was something I'd had when I was a teenager. It's full of facts and good practical advice that most parents will probably agree with. After I gave it to my daughter, both she and her best friend absolutely devoured it. I spotted it in her room the other day and it is now dog-eared from use and several entries in the long list of creative and humorous ways to say no to sex had been underlined or highlighted. My daughter told me that she appreciated this book not only for the information it provides about the mechanics of sex and birth control, but also the non-preachy way it covers the consequences of having sex and reasons to wait to have sex. I highly recommend this book and am glad that I purchased it for my daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Teens, March 7, 2001
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
Michael Basso has really created a handbook that every teenager, teacher, and parent should own. In an approachable question and answer format, Basso outlines the most frequently asked questions about anatomy, relationships, contraception/STDs, and violence that he has experienced in his many years as a high school teacher. Particularly wonderful are the informative and often funny illustrations peppered throughout the book.

I did find his weakest area to be the section on pregnancy and childbirth. (Episiotomy is NOT necessary for birth and numerous studies throughout the world has shown it to be an unnecessary procedure). I also took issue with his use of the word "AIDS" when most educators use "HIV" to describe this STD. I think that many teens (and adults) would not be able to put this book down - I know I couldn't!

Everything you hear about but people don't want to talk about - it's finally talked about here. I'm glad I finally found this book. It's going away with me to college this Fall. I only wish I found it sooner. If you care about your health, your relationships and your family, this book tells you how to be smart, healthy and how to feel good about yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to raise successful parents!, September 4, 2003
By
This review is from: The Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality (Paperback)
That is my FAVORITE chapter!! The whole book is awesome and it has information you don't find anywhere else like how to prevent being abused by adults, what to look for in relationships-and look out for, but that part on how to get along better with my parents has been super. I don't know if it was because of the new things I tried so we don't argue so much, but there seems to be less tension and we talk more. I HIGHLY recommend this book to other teens who want to know the facts about sex, as well as how to get along better with parents.

As my 15 year old son and 12 year old daughter are at the age where their hormones are dictating desires and raising questions, I needed a book that was easy to read and that would give me the information I needed to work conversations into our life and to answer questions they had. This book fit the bill. Both my son and daughter read this book and often read it together - and come to me with questions as to what I think about certain things as well. Nice job Mr. Basso!

Glad someone out there finally understands what is going on with young people and is giving us the information we want! Some of my friends like the abstinence section, some us need the contraception section, but what I like best is that not only is this about sex, but it let me know that I am not alone in a #$%@@ home life and that I can make it, and how. Adults don't realize what we go through and everyone thinks EVERY young person is treated right - well their wrong. I'm glad I got this information and I'm glad I'm not alone. This is a GREAT book-two thumbs up!
