Book Description

0929801016 978-0929801018 April 2001 3rd
Michael Minns's The Underground Lawyer was written as a symbol of growing intolerance for those in government and in law who have abused their power and authority, and abused the rights of every day people. It also serves as encouragement to attorneys who represent these victims and who have found themselves the prey of this abuse. Written in a colorful and vivid voyeur perspective, The Underground Lawyer chronicles actual case histories, courtroom activities, and some of Minn's history-changing appellate decisions where rulings have been overturned. Over the past 25 years, Minns has built a reputation as a fearless legal advocate and crusader for the little guy, and has represented hundreds of clients, from all over the United States, who have been wrongly accused by the IRS, law enforcement officers, government officials and even attorneys who took advantage, misrepresented or abused the rights of their clients. Since its initial release, law students across the country have used Minn's colorful book as an insider's guide that no one is beyond our system of justice - that despite power and authority - if someone has abused another's civil rights, taken advantage of their ignorance, or gone beyond the parameters of their authority, they may end up as the subject of a litigation or even criminal charges. Minns also clearly establishes the ground rules for overturning court decisions on appeal. Many of Minn's appellate decisions have become case law used again and again in similar legal actions.

Review

The case studies outlined in this book should make you angry, and determined to change a system that has made us a much poorer country, and wrecked such havoc on the lives and liberties of so many good Americans. --Ron Paul, U.S. Congressman and recent Presidential Candidate

The Underground Lawyer... is the best legal training currently available short of law school...The author's sportsmanlike standards carry over to the book....One of the most respected legal minds, and perhaps one of the few honest lawyers in the nation...Easily read and understood. --Paul DesFosses, CPA, former IRS agent, former President of the IRS Whistleblowers of America, former congressional witness on taxpayer's Bill of Rights, and author of IRS: Agency out of Control & Self Employed: IRS Target

When you box, you wear a metal cup to protect yourself from low blows. This book will be your metal cup to protect you against legal low blows. --ME Brown, Associate Chief, Arson Department, Houston, Texas and former middleweight boxing champion of Texas

From the Publisher

We are pleased to re-release The Underground Lawyer. Since its original release in 1988, The Underground Lawyer has become a symbol of victory and intollerance by tens of thousands of readers, many of which are attorneys, who use it regularly as a guide, in cases where their clients rights have been violated by either corruption, abuse of power, influence or wrong-doing. validation-form-field.bio: Michael Louis Minns is a successful Houston, Texas lawyer, who has built a reputation for representing the underdog. Many of the cases he accepts have no pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow, but his soft-spot for the downtrodden, and 'doing the right thing' have earned him a special place in the legal history books.

Minns was a former single parent and high school English teacher when he decided to attain his law degree. In 1977, within one week of passing the bar, after graduating from the South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas, he represented his first client in court.

Today, there are very few attorneys who hold licenses in as many courts and states as Minns - licensed in more than 30 jurisdictions, he has become recognized as one of the most traveled and prominent trial and criminal tax appellate lawyers in the country.

For the past 24 years, Minns has represented clients from Hawaii to New York, and Texas to Alaska. His many precedent-setting rulings in civil and criminal law, and appellate decisions have become case law, and are regularly quoted in trial proceedings across the country. During the 1997 and 1998 Congressional hearings, regarding IRS wrong–doing, some of Minns’ cases that deonstrated horrific examples of IRS abuse were part and parcel to the Senate’s evaluation of IRS treatment of taxpayers.

In 1988 Minns wrote The Underground Lawyer, which became a bestseller and serves as a symbolic bible of encouragement and wisdom for defense attorneys across the country. The Underground Lawyer (which will be re-released in February, 2001) chronicles many of his most difficult cases, and provides strategies for both the lawyer and client in dealing with civil and domestic actions, criminal income tax charges, and legal malpractice.

In March of 2001, Barricade Books will release 'HOW TO SURVIVE THE IRS - My Battles Against Goliath,' Minns chronicles many of the cases he has represented over the past 12 years, since~ release of The Underground Lawyer - actions he --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Book Shelf, January 23, 2001
By
G. L. Warren (Sugar Land, Tx USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Underground Lawyer (Hardcover)
Who would think a book on law would be impossible to put down, but this one is. In fact, I made the mistake of setting the book down after reading it for an hour and my partner grabbed it and wouldn't let me have it back until he read it. This was the first real threat to our partnership. This book is not only interesting and entertaining, it may actually be one of the few that is useful too.

When one of my children was recently arrested, I tried to get information as to her whereabouts, the charges, etc. with virtually no cooperation from any city or district attorneys nor the jail. I finally recalled Minns' recommendation to see a bondsman. I did and within 10-minutes had all the information regarding her. Minns' recommendations work. With the 100,000 new policemen Pres. Clinton put on the beat, everyone is more likely to have to deal with the legal community. Get this book and I promise you will be ahead in the legal game when you find you unexpectedly need to know what to do. I consider this one of the most valuable and useful books on my bookshelf.

If my partner thinks he will get this one back, he's got that wrong.
