Ecclectica!, June 5, 2002
This review is from: Underground Moderne (Audio CD)
This album was sent to me by Matthieu from Radio Nova Paris and it was the best christmas present i got in 2001. It perfectly captures the ecclectic of the present day. Unlike many compilations, which mainly stick to one genre (accept for maybe Francois Kevorkian, Gilles Peterson and Joe Claussell's comps).
Here goes the full tracklisting:
1. Ghost Rider (Suicide)
an early eighties no wave classic, first CD I ever bought
2. Mushroom (Can)
Best track of the full length Can cd
3. Gypsy Love (Silver Apples)
Fierce late sixties/early seventies no wave punk from UK
4. King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown (Augustus Pablo)
See what I mean? Fourth track is one of the better Tubby productions
5. Solo/from The Film 'der Tote Bin Ich'(Irmin Schmidt)
Wonderfully smooth and gray-ish
6. Sweet Surrender (Tim Buckley)
My first track by this artist who has a deeply penetrating voice
7. Le Voyageur (Heldon)
Guitar, slow, parlando.
8. Chrysler Rose (Dashiell Hedayat)
J'ai une chrysler tout au fond de la rue, elle ne sait plus rouler, mais c'est là ou je fais l'amour.... super. French garage rock of the seventies
9. Fohat Digs Holes In Space (Gong)
This is the jingle of a local radio show here in Antwerp, so I always skip it. Gong usually has Steve Hillage on guitar, whose work I admire
10. Comme à La Radio(Brigitte Fontaine;Areski;Art Ensemble Of Chicago)
Brigitte Fontaine, the French vocalist, is a bit of 'poseur", the music is is from the time that AEC resided in Paris?
11. Revolutionary Words (Mutabaruka)
Reggae spoken word
12. You Play For Us Today (Agitation Free)
Not sure this track is featured on the cd
13. Peaches En Regalia (Frank Zappa)
extremely nice track by Mr Zappa, lots of tempo and mood shifts
14. Birds Lament(Moondog)
This jazz track is worth the price of the CD. Recently sampled in a hous track by Mr Scruff, if I am not mistaken
15. One Nation Under A Groove (Funkadelic)
Sweet, sweet sweet
Enjoy, one of the best comps out there!
Yours
