2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Underground: Music Inspired and Taken from Kusturica Film (Audio CD)
First things first, Emir Kusturica's film 'Underground' is amazing. One of my favorite all time picks. The music that is in the film is, with little exception, outstanding.

This cd, however, does not contain the songs that are within the film. Or rather, many of the signature pieces of music from the film are represented here, but in different versions.
Songs like 'Mesecina-Moonlight', a song presented in the film with a sort of drunken group feel, is here, but the performance isn't the same. It's more polished, and feels somehow devoid of emotion; this is a huge disappointment, since emotion is something the film does amazingly well.
The opening tune, Kalasnijkov, a tune heard in the film as a group of brass players chase a horse drawn carriage throught the streets of Belgrade is similar, but too heavily features the vocals and drums to feel right. In fact, it has a distant, in sensitive feel to it, something that makes me question whether the drums used in this recording are even real, or merely simulated with a machine.
In any case, this tune suddenly feels like it's been processed through some sort of Popular music generator, having been spat out the other side with elements that someone somewhere decided ought to be added so the tune might be more palatable.

Ringe Ringe Raja doesn't come across with the warm aged vinyl feeling it did in the film. Instead, it feels like a chincy reproduction - which I suppose it is.

Unfortunately the recordings used in the film just still don't seem to be available. This recording is alright, on it's own merit, but if what you, like myself, might be looking for is a recreation of the music from the film, you're bound to be disappointed.

Indeed, this music is absolutely inspired by the film, and that's not often as good as something directly from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars this music is great!, March 6, 2006
This review is from: Underground: Music Inspired and Taken from Kusturica Film (Audio CD)
I just watched this movie again last night and the music is incredibly good. If it is exactly the same music from the film or not (there is certainly some tracks on this disc that aren't in the film, but hey, Credence isn't on the Big Lebowski soundtrack...), I can't tell anymore and just enjoy hearing it again and again.
