IMPORTANT PART OF OUR HISTORY EXPLAINED FOR THE YOUNG.,
This review is from: The Underground R.R (Cornerstones of Freedom) (Paperback)
This is another of those works that surprisingly is now out of print. This review is being done of the hard back version of this work 1981 by the Children's Press of Chicago.
It is difficult to figure out how the author, R. Conrad Stein was able to pack so much information in a mere 30 pages. For a children's book, this one sort of tells it like it was. While it certainly is not as brutal as the classic TBAS, or the original work that one was taken from, i.e. Bull whip days, it never the less describes phenomena which we now refer to as "The Underground Railroad" quite well. This work gives a history of the Underground Railroad from beginning to end. It gives some rather vivid accounts of the working of this informal organization and a number of the individuals who were quite involved such as James Fairfield, Harriet Tubman and of course Levi Coffin and his Quaker friends. The author has used precise language to describe the history and events which took place during this era. The book is well illustrated with black and white drawings (most effective, I might say) by Ralph Canaday. While not being graphic, the author and illustrator have certainly left no doubt in the readers mind as to the brutality of this system. I liked that. While I am not one of those people who feel that children should be exposed to all sorts of violent acts via their reading, I do feel that in this case the child needs to know beyond a doubt the reasons behind this movement and needs to be able to examine all sides of the issue of slavery as it was practiced in this country. The targeted age group is just about right on this one. This is certainly one that needs to be in all school libraries.
