Format: Audio CD
Tim Krekel is without a doubt one of America's most overlooked tunesmiths and guitarists. The Louisville, Kentucky-based songwriter has penned hits for - among others - Chrystal Gayle, Patty Loveless, Delbert McClinton, and Deana Carter. He has also toured and recorded with Jimmy Buffett and Billy Swan. "Underground" is Krekel's follow-up release to his brilliant 1998 effort, "L & N" - both of which are released on the indie label, ear X-tacy.
While Krekel fans may have projected that the wonderful (17-track) "L & N" would be a difficult benchmark to surpass, he packs a mighty punch with the 15-song line-up on "Underground." A busy songwriter whose tunes get pitched to Nashville-based country artists on a regular basis, Krekel's rendering of his own compositions don't fall anywhere close to categorization as country tunes. They are better described as melodic, adult-oriented, roots rock with plenty of soul and a healthy dash of country and bluegrass.
The bottomline is that Krekel throws out more hooks than fishermen on a Gulf of Mexico pier at sunset. This is a CD chock full of great songs - from the Beatlesque refrain of "Anna" to the rootsy delivery of "All Night Radio." From the back porch mandolin and harmonica of "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" to the sparsely produced "Where I've Fallen" (on which songwriting pal Kim Richey provides background vocals). From the guitar-driven groove of "Take a Ride" to the hilarious country swagger of "Redneck Van."
Krekel's tight-knit Louisville-based band includes Jim Baugher on bass/vocals, Peter Rhee on violin/mandolin and vocals, and David Marasco on drums/percussion.

I am a native Louisvillian and feel somewhat guilty that I have waited until this point in my life to discover one of Louisville's treasures! A friend I work with began telling me about Tim being in concert locally and suddenly my mind twirled back to the 70's & 80's when I heard his name mentioned and remembered he was from Louisville and had toured with Jimmy Buffett, but for some reason I wasn't compelled to find out more until now. I have to admit I am 100% addicted, I listen to him at my desk at work, in my car, on my IPod, on the plane and I go to every local concert I can. Folks, Tim is just like you and I, having experienced life from both sides, the good and the bad, but remains positive and upbeat and committed to bringing Louisvillians a wonderful concert 2-3 nights a week and writing songs with a local flavor. I recommend this CD "Underground" as well as his 2 newer ones,"World Keeps Turnin'" and "Soul Season". You can find out more about Tim and where he's performing at [...]. Thanks for reading!
