As a mom of three young children as well as an aide in an elementary school library, I read a lot of children's literature. I wanted to read this series because I heard such good things about it. I was not disappointed. I tore through all five books very quickly. The story line is very imaginative and spellbinding. I encouraged my son to read them (age 9) and he adores them. A strong 11 year old boy protagonist surrounded by rats and bugs in an underground land seems like it was written for young boys! The second and third books were not as strong as the first, but the forth and fifth were fantastic, wrapping up the series. A warning though. The fourth is rather dark, with what I can only call the beginning of a genocide...one race of rats trying to annhiliate another race of mice. In one scene, the rats "relocate" the unsuspecting mice to a volcanic pit where they are trapped and die of gas poison. For younger children it may be troubling. For me the WWII similarities were frightening. That said, I loved the series. Gregor is ethical, and loving, and has a strong moral conscience. Wrap that up with a great adventure story line and it is on the top of my list of recommended reading for the older kids in my school.

My son read all 5 books in less than three days. He absolutely loved them.
