Biography

Underworld are an electronic band formed in the UK by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, later joined by Darren Emerson. The band rose to prominence when their track "Born Slippy" was used in the film Trainspotting.

Hyde and Smith met at college and formed the electro-band Freur. Freur released two albums and had a minor hit in the UK with the track "Doot Doot", although the band failed to make a great… Read more in Amazon's Underworld Store

Editorial Reviews

Their 1988 debut on Sire, featuring a sound & style radically different than what they are currently known for, as it sounds like a mix of Howard Jones & Depeche Mode! 10 tracks total, including 'Glory! Glory!', 'Call Me No.1' and 'Rubber Ball (Space Kitchen)'. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourites from the 80s, July 10, 2000
This review is from: Underneath the Radar (Audio CD)
Judging from the other reviews, the fact that after this release the band chaged style to a more 90s upbeat style, seems to have done little good for this album. Personally, I dislike their later work. Now that means that if you like 80s music, then you will probably love this album like I do. And, if you like their more recent work, then this will be a great disappointment to you.

Two tracks from this album were mega-hits in this part of the world - "Glory! Glory!" and "Underneath the Radar". The other tracks are not as strong, but it is good stuff nevertheless, with tracks like "Pray" and "Call Me No.1" very much agreeing with me. This is a relatively dark album, possibly edging towards the "alternative" genre given the interesting usage of synth, but with a definite 80s pop flavour.

So, if you like 80s music, then get this and you won't be disappointed. Otherwise, perhaps stay away.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dance/Alternative Music Brainchild., June 7, 2000

Jonas Cukierman (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Underneath the Radar (Audio CD)
When I purchased this album back in 1988, it had been after seeing the video for the title track. Being that I was in a band which played similar music (Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Electronic), I fell in love with Underworld's unique sound and appearance. They had (have) a remarkable talent for creating a techno mood by painting a picture of a mechanical world. In addition, they are one of the few bands who can render a melodic song even though they are vastly electronic. Such songs as Underneath The Radar, Call Me Number One and Space Kitchen are fantastic examples of Underworld's ability to create a haunting and sense arousing meld of music and technology...man and machine. For a band which relies heavily on electronics and effects, they have an insightful understanding of the melodious and danceable interdependence of space-age vision that hasn't lost its human roots. Underneath The Radar is a rare example of the balance we try to strike between the speed of technology and the good old fashioned human condition. Also check out their most recent album Beaucoup Fish. Although completely different in style and content, it does echo thier ultra-modernist talent for techno flash and is equally ahead of its time- not to mention extraordinary. Finally, they have a song on the soundtrack of the movie Wild Orchid, a terrible film with an exceptional collection of songs. The track is called Promise Land and is very much along the lines as the mellow songs found on "Underneath The Radar". If you are a die-hard fan of 80's dance that carried with it a premonition of sounds to come, Underneath The Radar is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actual Music!, July 12, 2005

Don't get me wrong - I like the techno Underworld stuff on Friday nights when I'm anticipating a party weekend. But the other 90% of the time when I am not in party mode, I prefer something more melodic, and this album fits the bill.

I disagree with comparisons to Yaz and Depeche Mode. This album has a little bit more mature funk to it. If I was to compare it to another band, I would say it sounds more like Ministry before they went hard industrial. And, similar to the early Tears for Fears albums, all of the songs are strong enough to make the entire album playable.

If you like 80s pop, this album is a must. But if you like the edgier techno of Underworld, you might be disappointed.
