4.0 out of 5 stars Your Choices can impact so many, October 27, 2009
By
This review is from: Underneath it all (Paperback)
This easy read was packed with emotional struggles and very timely issues. This book is about relationships, how the twist and turns of choices can affect the lives of those in these relationships and those around the people in them.

One person choices linked many, some willing participants and one unknowingly then many were impacted from the fallout . I found it interesting and compelling. I actually read it twice and am looking forward to his next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Reap What You Sow, October 12, 2009
This review is from: Underneath it all (Paperback)
How far would you go to protect your biggest secret? Would you be willing to pay a stipend to several individuals or surround yourself with a bevy of beautiful women? Underneath It All by R.L. Davis is a great read about a pro-ball player who is on the down low, and refuses to admit to his lifestyle. Colorful characters and drama up close and personal fill the pages of this fast-paced book.

Janelle is in love with JC. He he has it all; fame, money and a lavish lifestyle. The sad part is JC wants to get his hands on all the available women who come his way, and will even show some interest in a male or two. This time JC has bitten off more than he can chew and Janelle has to reap his dangerously sown oats. Giving back to her community Janelle sets out to speak to women about health issues, and how her business is thriving. JC on the other hand is in denial about who he is and what he has done to all of those women he surrounds himself with.

Tommy is a down-low stripper who makes his money by shaking his groove thang and paid by his collection of women. Tommy has fallen in love with JC and will not stop until he can have him all to himself. Tommy stoops so low that there is nothing that can redeem what he has done to JC's career. JC cannot believe how overnight his world has come crumbling down; he lost his girl, his endorsements, his career so his next question is what is he living for?

In between losing his sanity, JC has an awakening moment and contacts Janelle to ask for her forgiveness. Can JC come to grips with the decisions he has made? Or will he take matters into his own hands? Can Tommy find love after all of the heartbreak he has caused? I recommend this book to readers of all genres' who love a good, fast-paced read that will have you thinking this could have been me. With this being R.L. Davis' first book it was not only well-written, but detailed and relatable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!, June 1, 2011
This review is from: Underneath it all (Paperback)
This book was good from beginning to end. It grabs your attention in the first chapter and makes you want to read more. The characters are clearly portrayed through the author's eyes and some of his experiences. I am waiting on the next book (and hopefully movie) to follow. Good Job!!!

The Main Players:

Janelle Taylor: President and CEO of JT Image & Marketing Inc. Janelle is on a mission to speak to young people about health issues and the importance of education and having a career. She is also dealing with personal problems, one of them being the break up between her and JC; and how she's going to break it to him WHY she is now his ex!

Jarred Capone: Aka J.C. A NBA ball player who takes his lavish life with money, women and booze to another level, while sleeping around like tomorrow was promised to him!

Tommy: A male Down Low stripper who frequents the famous and wealthy circles and falls in love with JC. JC only wants to test the waters and swim back to shore whenever he pleases, but Tommy isn't having that and is willing to play dirty to keep JC anchored.

"Underneath It All" opens Pandora's Box and the expose hurts many people. These characters are in the thick of it all and unfortunately it will be too late for some. JC is a cocky, selfish, dawg, and he will pay the price for being just that!

This is author Rl Davis debut novel and he did a fine job of exposing the raw emotions and the actions many take when under duress. He also shows how even when people are faced with the truth some still choose to be ignorant.

This is a must read!

A very quick read, but packs a powerful punch. I'm looking forward to Rl's next project...just hoping he gives us a bigger novel next time around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Consequences ( 3.5 stars), January 6, 2010
This review is from: Underneath it all (Paperback)
Janelle is a smart and successful businesswoman who tries to get all that she wants out of life. Janelle thought she had the perfect relationship with an NBA player name JC, but that is not the case. Janelle is faced with some tough decisions when she is faced with a life-threatening disease. JC loves living the life of fast cars and fast women. He thinks that nothing he does is wrong, until someone tries to expose a potential career ending secret to the public. Will JC be able to stop this person from ruining his life, or will he be too late?

Underneath It All is a thought-provoking novel by R.L. Davis. Davis does a good job of showing that everything that looks good isn't always good for you. The characters in this book were raw and relatable. Davis demonstrated realistic consequences of when people engage in promiscuous behavior. This novel also shows that revenge isn't always sweet. The storyline was fast-paced and will grab your attention immediately. The only downside of this novel was the editing issues. Underneath It All is still a great debut novel by R.L. Davis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, July 3, 2009
This review is from: Underneath it all (Paperback)
I fairly enjoyed this book. It touched on a subject that is very taboo in the united states right now. The characters grab my attention from the start. R.L. Wrote with so much passion you became the characters. It was like being inside a movie. The ending was outstanding, not to give it away but it was outstanding! Can't wait to reread it again.
