More About the Author

Cheri J. Meiners, M.Ed. was born in Logan, Utah, and lives in Maryland with her husband David. They have six children and one grandchild.

The 'Learning to Get Along' series of 15 books (and one software product) evolved from books that Cheri wrote for her own children. In 2008, Reach Out and Give won the Carol D. Reiser children's book award for promoting volunteerism. The series was also a finalist in 2006 for Learning Magazine's Teacher's Choice Award. In 2005, Booklist named the books 'Top 5 Character Education Series'. Several of the books are currently translated into Portuguese, Arabic, Korean, Slovak and Indonesian and Greek.

Her education included studying art in London, studying Swedish history and culture at Stockholm University, student teaching on a Ute Indian reservation in Utah, and graduating with High Honors in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University. She also volunteered as a missionary in Italy for a year and a half and later taught first graders in Idaho. She earned her masters degree in Elementary and Gifted Education at Utah State University, where she also taught classes and supervised student teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for adressing empathy (or lack thereof :), September 19, 2007

This is the third book in the series that I have purchased for my 2 1/2 year old, and it's great. Simple repetitive language and clear pictures have helped us address typical 2-year-old selfishness from a new angle... I think it would also be great for early elementary age children with delays in their social understanding (autism, developmental delays, etc.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for younger children or those needing more help, January 21, 2010

This is a very good book and works well for my 2 and 3 year olds but I purchased it for my 6 year old who has Sensory Processing Disorder. I think it's just a littel too immature for him even with his Sensory issues. I could see how this would help with a child with more extensive sensory issues such as those in Autism. My 6 year old is just a bit beyond this book and doesn't want to read it. My toddlers really enjoy it and it really helps them learn about empathy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book for teaching empathy, April 18, 2011

This is my favorite of the books by Cheri Meiners. The illustrations are vivid and the book is an excellent tool for teaching what different emotions look like. The book teaches not only how to identify emotions but also how to empathize with other people's feelings. I did use my own words to describe what was going on in the pictures vs. the actual text, but you can narrate it in the way you feel best works.
