5.0 out of 5 stars rock and roll
* from the first rift on 'this is not a love song ', I was absolutely hooked by this cd. it's straight pop-rock/emo goodness that makes you want to listen over and over again. these guys could easily take the stage with such bands as the get up kids or promise ring and come out strong. I highly recommend a listen.. or two or three. insightful love lyrics and boyish...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wow, other reviewers looove this, but I don't. Am I crazy?
This is an early album for the band, and it shows. If you buy this CD, expect to see some flashes of brilliance, surrounded by some pretty amateurish moments. For instance, in the song, "Seven Forty Seven" part of the chorus is "take a holiday with me, I've asked you twice before, will this be the time you finally say yes to me, I've asked you times...

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to buy it and listen to the whole thing....NOW, October 31, 2000

I just recently bought this CD after long contemplating on whether or not to buy it. Wow, am I glad I did. The Juliana Theory took me by complete surprise. I didn't even really know what the expect when I bought it, except for the fact that I knew it was not going to be one of the normal Punk Rock CD's I usually buy. Instead, The Theory combines perfectly layered guitars, some acoustics, superb vocals, and intricate bass and drum segments to create an excellent mix of music perfection that can only be described as Emo-Rock-Punk. This album has songs that rock out hard, songs that can choke you up, and songs that can put you to sleep; but most of all it has some of the most poetic lyrics I have ever heard. The Juliana Theory is one of those bands you just need to put the CD in and listen to it the whole way through and enjoy the album as a music experience rather than just a few good songs. There are highlights of course....stand out tracks are-"Duane Joseph," "Seven Forty Seven," "The Closest Thing," "Music Box Superhero," and "Constellation."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, This Is Unbelievable, August 4, 2000
This review is from: Understand This Is a Dream (Audio CD)
This album is simply amazing. Imagine the Get Up Kids meeting up with Jimmy Eat World, then collaborating and recording an album with tons of emotion and raw guitar work. Well stop imagining and listen the sound clips of the Theory's first CD. "Understand This Is A Dream" is awesome; Brett Detar, formerly of Solidstate Records' Zao, lets his amazing voice ring true in these songs. His range is incredible and all of the band's musical adeptness is more than just intriguing. If you like bands such as Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring, Poor Old Lu, or Further Seems Forever, then this album will stay in your changer. Rock on, Juliana Theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rockingest Band In The World, December 4, 1999

This review is from: Understand This Is a Dream (Audio CD)
The Juliana Therory is very hard to explain. They're on fire! They understand that they don't need to cuss to be cool. Their sound is amazing. I got this cd in mid October, and it hasn't come out of my cd player since. Listen to all the songs. They rock so hard. This is the kind of band that you don't have to get used to, such as Sunny Day Real Estate. The Juliana Theory has it all together, they have that polished sound such as bands like Jimmy Eat World and Live do. Overall, this cd is just awesome. The lyrics are great, sort of gut wrenching, but not to the extent of whining. Most of their songs have to do with relationships or to that effect. If you don't have this cd, buy it now. You WILL NOT regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before they became prog-rock superstars....., October 11, 2002

This album is amazing. No, it's not incredibly wacky or "out-there". On this album is 10 pure pop rock gems. Emotion is Dead was pretty good, but it showed the direction that they were to head in. Their newest EP shows the pretentious jerks that they have become. Understand this is a Dream is still an amazing album though, chock full of pop gems, if you understood music you'd understand that it takes more talent to be a genuine songwriter than to rip off all of your favorite classic rock bands.....

Pink Floyd they're not.

This is a good CD. There is nothiong wrong with it, it is just that the band had some more developing to do. There are some great songs, and there are some songs that just don't have the polish that you expect from a TJT song. That said it is a much stronger and less popy sound. If you found there to be to much pop influence on Emotion is Dead this is the CD for you.

After listening to this cd once, i can't get the lyrics out of my head. While they are not a christian band, their lyrics have a overall feeling of spirituality, which isn't necessarily confined to one religion. This group is up there with the greats of Bright Eyes, Jimmy Eat World, and many other groups that I can't think of the names of just now. Juliana Theory is a must for any Emo fan

i have to say when i first got this cd from a friend i was not too sure that i would like it, but after to listening to the whole cd i found that it was actually pretty good. the guitar-work is amazing and brett detar sounds a lot better on here than he does on the old zao stuff. the best song on here is constellation b/c the guitars just go all out. if u love great guitar playing or u like emo, i recommend that u check this cd out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Indie Rock Album of '99, January 26, 2000

From the moment I saw these guys in concert, I was hooked. I originally heard of them from an old split CD with Dawson High, but wasn't that interested at the time. Once I heard them though, they immediately became my favorite band. From Brett Detar's perfect vocals, to Josh Kosker's amazing guitar riffs, this CD is perhaps the best indie rock album of '99. Check out "August In Bethany", one of my personal favorites. - Jesse of The Rejection Set.

This is a very creative example of poppy rock and roll. It goes from soft to explosive to fun bob your head music. Very good. I recommend it to anyone who likes Third Eye Blind and anything along the lines of good ol' fashioned rock and roll.
