What's different about this book are the temperaments themselves (choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholic - instead of the standard Myers-Briggs type) and learning how to "guess" temperaments by observing body-types and favorite colors. What's missing are "quizzes" to help figure out what temperament you are and helpful hints on working with others of different temperaments. The information is presented in an easy-to-read conversational style. I recommend it as a supplement to other books on temperaments (my favorites being "Kids, Parents and Power Struggles" and "Raising your Spirited Child") and not as your only source for information on this subject.

Great book yet somewhat advanced. Without 20+ years of studying the 4 temperaments, I would have struggled with Childs' book were I a beginner. If you're new to studying the 4 temperaments, check out "Personality Plus" by Florence Littauer and her many other wonderful books. Also books by Tim LaHaye on the temperaments, although his emphasis on Christianity can be a little heavy going at times. However, LaHaye's material is well worth the read, especially on temperament blends. Also look into "The Four Temperaments" by Randy Rolfe, J.D., M.A.

Experience and observation show me I don't agree with everything Childs writes in his book about the body type for the temperaments, but there's enough solid information here to warrant prominently placing his book on my temperament shelf.

For example, Childs says that Sanguines aren't easy to recognize by their body types. Maybe so, but just look for their constantly open mouths (usually always talking) and expressive gesturing with their hands and arms. You can usually hear them before you see them!

What's refreshing in Childs' book is he presents information here I have not seen mentioned in any other book on the 4 temperaments yet my experience and observation have proved the material true.

For example, "All children up to the age of ten or eleven can be expected to show typical characteristics associated with the sanguine temperament. Whatever their main temperament is, or their secondary one, they will be ... overlaid by a pattern of sanguine traits." Another example is in the section on "Growing older with your temperament," Childs says that "Choleric people keep their figures as a rule, for they tend to remain active and burn up those excess calories.

Very good book. Interesting and easy to read and understand. Very well written and answers a lot of questions one might have about the different temperments.
