About the Author

Bob Dowell, English professor, retired from university teaching in 1999 in order to devote full time to a project conceived while teaching his favorite course—“The Bible as Literature.” He envisioned developing a forum in which readers could readily engage in a head-and-heart understanding of the Bible. For a decade, he worked on the project, all the while piloting his production through a church-sponsored Bible study—“Back to the Bible with Dr. Bob.” The success of that study spoke to the efficacy of publishing the materials for purposes of reaching a wider audience. Thus, Dr. Bob’s vision becomes a reality in the publication of Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart. Fittingly, his first publication as a professor is an article in College English (1965) entitled “The Moment of Grace in the Fiction of Flannery O’Connor.” Retired, Dr. Bob loves the fact that his literary career is now capped by a notable publication on the world’s greatest literary masterpiece: the Bible.

More About the Author

Bob Dowell (Dr. Bob) was born in East Texas in 1932 where he resided
until his late teens when he decided to combine farm life with
academia. After earning the PhD in 1962, he began his college
teaching career, a career spanning more than three decades in which
he served not only as professor of English, but also did stints as
academic dean and honors studies director (which also involved
understanding literature programs for high school students). In 1999,
Dr. Bob retired from college teaching in order to write, his subject
being the Bible. Capitalizing on years of Bible study for his
favorite course, The Bible as Literature, he began constructing a
forum for understanding the Bible and piloting the forum through
a church Bible study called "Back to the Bible with Dr. Bob." The
success of that program (a program utilizing both prose and poetry)
led to the publication of Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart, a
project that telescoped three great passions of the author: reading,
writing, and Bible study. Yet the author is no ivory tower pedant; he
has maintained his agrarian roots. He enjoys spending time at the
family farm where he was born and where he raises cattle, and where he
and his wife, periodically host their children and their grandchildren at
their beloved "palace in the pasture" homestead.

Format: Paperback
Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart, Part One: The Old Testament written by Dr. Bob Dowell offers the reader an academic and insightful approach to studying and understanding the Old Testament. Dr. Dowell uses prose summary for a clear and concise grasp of each chapter. In fact, Dr. Dowell's prose summary affords the reader, whether a new student to the Bible or a seasoned student of the Bible, a concise reiteration of each chapter's text. Following each prose summary, he writes the chapter's story in poetry which reveals the passionate and spiritual aspect of the themes. Together, both the prose summary followed by the story in poetry form allow the reader to experience the literal and the spiritual fullness of each chapter of the Old Testament. This book would be an important addition to the library of any individual seriously interested in understanding the Old Testament. Moreover, Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart, Part One would be an excellent study book to use in a group Bible study, Sunday school class, and/or an Introduction to the Bible academic course since the book undoubtedly provides accuracy of facts along with spiritual inspiration. Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart will allow individuals, who may have approached Bible study with reluctance, to gain confidence so as to have an appreciation and knowledge of the Bible they have not previously experienced.

Loved it! Especially fond of the poem about the story of Jonah. Gave me a way deeper understanding of the story and showed me how relevant the bible is to life today. I could share these awesome poems with the whole family!!

There are two types of people in this world: head people, heart people and those who live somewhere in between. Okay, that's three. Christianity is a beach for them all. There are times to get into your heart and surf the big waves and times to just soak your head close to shore. If you want to achieve the goal of reading through the Old Testament without getting bogged down, look no further than Dr. Bob Dowell's great book. It will warm your heart and make your head smile :)
