Among all the leading technologies to provide broadband services to the end users, broadband over power line (BPL) is definitely one of the most promising and challenging choices. Though the technology is not fully mature yet its advantages are obvious that users can use the exisitng electrical power line so no extra wire or network installation is necessary.
This book describes the BPL technology, equipment vendors, standard bodies and the future challenges in plain English terms. My major concern is this book does not provide enough details so the readers need to explore more from other resources in order to gain deeper understanding of this interesting subject. On the other hand, the content is a good resource to get basic knowledge in this area. For instances, table 3.3 on page 63 is informative for the readers to get an overview of the IEEE 802.11a OFDM modulation methods; and table 8.1 on page 173 provides the BOL average cost per subscriber for economics concern. I recommend this book as a good introductory fundation for anyone who wants to get a basic understanding of what is broadband over the power line. |
