5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I teach a course using this book. This book is excellent! Even my students like the book (although the price is on the high end). The material is presented in a clear, easy to understand but interesting manner. It covers the wide topics covered in business and provides a great "understanding of business". I highly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is the joke of the century! What a mess!
I needed this book for a class as well. It was a very annoying experience: I had to inadvertently purchase a 3.5 inch three-ringed binder just to carry it around, which did not even fit in my backpack. I had to take large sections out of the binder so that I would not be so bombarded by the pages ripping or falling out when I would open the binder's rings. Moreover, this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Intro to Business Concepts..., July 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Understanding Business (Hardcover)
Being somewhat of an entrepreneur, I decided to enhance my business background by taking an introductory course in business this Fall, 2011. This is the assigned text, and I prefer to get familiar with course materials as soon as published. Honestly, this text is not what I expected from an introductory textbook. It gives a solid overview of past and current business science. The online materials augmenting the text are impressive, and downloadable for the most part.

The topics discussed in the text are pertinent and current to issues being experienced both locally, nationally, and internationally: Business Trends; Business Ownership; Business Management; Human Resources; Marketing; Financial Resources.

The text is easy to read. It includes highlights of business personalities from the local, national, and international arenas, and why they are significant in the business world. The layout of the subject materials is highly organized and makes the taking of notes easy as well.

The online materials are designed to augment the text by offering study aides that can be downloaded and printed including practice tests, case studies with practice tests, videos, and more.

Overall, I find this text both informative and worth reading for anyone interested learning the foundations of business science regardless of whether it is for a college course or personal interest.

Respectfully,

Michael J. Reeves, AA, ASc

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, concise and up-to-date, October 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was required for a business class and as it was just published (April 2010) it is very up-to-date, including the current recession. Chapters are compact, easy to read with good layout, and key points and terms are highlighted and easy to find. It would be a good book for those who want to consider being an entrepreneur but don't know what it entails and don't have time to take a class. The only drawback is Connect, the online compliment where you do homework and quizzes. They have some of the answers wrong and I don't believe they have updated it from the previous version... it just needs a bit of tweaking. I got the loose-leaf version (you put it in a 3-ring binder) but I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for the hardbound cause I think I'll keep it after I'm done with the class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally perfect and very informative, August 11, 2011
I love everything about this book, the organization, the examples, the progress assessment. It's like an encyclopedia for beginners in business. I totally recommend this book for people who are interested in business and want to get some background in this field.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is the joke of the century! What a mess!, March 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Moreover, this book is for high school students and should not be used for a college class. The worst thing about this was that I could not participate in buyback sales because it was a loose-leaf edition. I could even argue that it was not even needed for the class because the professor simply repeated the vocabulary that is in it. Why not just print out sheets of paper with the words on it?

By the way, do I really need to know what the definition of money is as a college student?

5.0 out of 5 stars College Text - BUS 101, June 20, 2011
This review is from: Understanding Business (Hardcover)
This book was required for my BUS 101 course. This book has 20 chapters that are about 20-30 pages each. The books is well laid out and gives you a good overview of many important business topics. At the start of each chapter, they have a profile of a company/person so that as you're heading into the chapter you can have a kind of real-world example to tie the chapter's subject matter to. The key terms are laid out in the margins throughout the chapter so you can quickly find them and read their definitions. If you need a deeper undestanding of the key term then you are already on the page where it was first used. The chapter summary is laid out in a question and answer format, giving you a second chance at learning the concept which they spoke about in the chapter. In the "casing the web" section there appears to be a link to more material, possibly a video (I didn't have time during the quarter to watch any though). At the end of every chapter there is also a "video case" section that is possible linked to the previous video, but even without is a very interesting page or two of reading. Overall it's a well laid out book with a good mix of color and graphics and isn't a "dry" read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit hard to follow but overall a great text, February 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Understanding Business (Hardcover)
The text is actually a great, easy read without a doubt. The information is presented in a casual tone instead of the traditional, uptight and formal feel you usually get in a text. The only problem I have with the book is that there are tons of inserts in the chapter. How to be green. This person achieved their dreams. This company is awesome. Here's a lesson(s) learned. Here's a section summary. What did you learn?, and so forth... It's a bit much and tends to be pretty distracting when every other page has the chapter interrupted by another "pop-up" type message. Aside from that, I'd highly recommend it and find it to be a great tool for the class I'm in.
