Practical and Necessary; a Good Start,
By
This review is from: Understanding Your Child's Health (Paperback)
Dr. Schulman is a well known pediatrician in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn has a very large Orthodox Jewish population, many of her patients are Orthodox Jews, and the primary audience for this book is the Orthodox Jewish community.
Understanding Your Child's Health is written clearly and concisely. Although it's not an encyclopedic child health care book, Dr. Schulman does a good job of covering all of the most important aspects of children's health. What I, as an Orthodox Jew, found most interesting about Understanding Your Child's Health was its focus on issues endemic to the Orthodox community. Eating healthfully (even on Shabbos and Yom Tov), new mothers (leaving Bris arrangements to others while) recuperating from childbirth, social smoking and exercise (for yeshiva boys); these are issues that have a particular slant among the Orthodox Jewish community. Dr. Schulman covers these topics with authority. Dr. Schulman is an expert in medicine and is familiar with the Orthodox Community. That makes this book a perfect resource for Orthodox Jewish parents, and a great gift for soon-to-be parents. Hopefully, Understanding Your Child's Health will be the first of many resource-type books tailored for the Orthodox Community. Anyone out there care to write one on education?

Understanding Your Child's Health is a super practical guide to raising children in today's society. While this book seems to be geared toward the Jewish population and their specific needs like preparing nutritious foods on the Jewish holidays, the author gives a basic education on childrens health issues and simple practical ways to deal with them.
Some of the many items covered by the author, Dr. Susan Schulman are buying a childs first pair of shoes and how to save a ton of money, understanding childrens nutrition ( one should include some fat in their diet every day!). Other areas included in the book are as diverse as childproofing your home and proper exercise for a child. Understanding Your Child's Health also includes problems that parents must sometimes deal with like fever, ear problems,AHHD, allergy's and a host of other timely topics and issues we face with our children today. I bought it as a reference book but found that I read it cover to cover. It was a very easy read and a book that I'm sure I will refer to over and over again.

most readable child care book,
This review is from: Understanding Your Child's Health (Paperback)
I read this book cover to cover and now I use it as a reference for questions from my children about their children. I now recommended it to my married children as well as my friends' children. Although it has some chapters devoted to the Jewish community and their life style, it is a terrific source of information for any parents. The biggest advantage of this book is that the explanations are so clear and easy to understand. It has made me an expert on many subjects. |
