Understanding Diabetes, 11th Edition

We were given the previous edition of this book in the hospital when our son was initially diagnosed with Type I diabetes. It was referenced in every appointment and class following that. When the new edition came out, we knew we needed it to have current information at our fingertips. It is easy to read and reference - you do not need to be in the medical field to understand it - you simply need to know someone with diabetes that you want to help!

We were given a copy of this book when my son was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes five years ago. The information in this book has literally saved his life ... not to mention my sanity! It is well organized and you don't have to read it all at once, which is especially important for newly diagnosed kids and their overwhelmed parents. The sick day information proved invaluable ...

A must-have for all people and families with type 1 diabetes. Each edition is ahead of the game with information about all the new and upcoming types of treatment options (insulin, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, etc.) I have bought every edition since I was diagnosed with diabetes 15 years ago and will continue to buy all future editions.

My teenaged son was recently diagnosed with Type I Diabetes and the hospital gave us the 11th edition of H. Peter Chase's "A First Book for Understanding Diabetes". It's a great book, but the nurse showed us her copy of the larger book, "Understanding Diabetes - 11th Edition", and we decided to get it, too.

I was surprised at the prices I saw for the 11th edition - obviously it's out of print! So I went searching further, and if, like me, you are looking for the full-sized "Pink Panther Book", I'm happy to report that a 12th edition has been published. So far, the only place where I've found it's available is from the Children's Diabetes Foundation at Denver. There is also a 12th edition of "A First Book For Understanding Diabetes" available and the 2010 edition Dr. Peter Chase's "Understanding Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors".

Perhaps, eventually, these books may be available at more places.

From my experience, doctors are very poor at explaining diabetes. That is why a whole industry of educators has opened up. Well there are some places you have to start and reading a few well chosen books and focusing in on your type of diabetes (juvenile, Type 1, Type 2, taking insulin or not, medication or not, overweight or not) is a good ay to go. With some of the reading under your belt you will have a far better understanding of what you have to do. I am not overweight at all and have a borderline case of Type II. This book gives a great understanding and is told with the help of the Pink Panther. It helps if you need it for a child, but is great for adults as well. This book, and Blood Sugar 101 are both very helpful. If you know 10 people over age 40, chances are 1, 2, or even 3 of them have some form of diabetes or pre-diabetes and need this information. Whomever has diabetes and values their health, will be taking care of it for the rest of their life. A book like this makes it easier, especially if you are new to it.

My 5 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with type I diabetes. A visit to her primary care doctor had a quick referral to the Barbara Davis Center in Aurora, Colorado that day, where she began to receive treatment for astronomically high blood sugar and ketones. Once the treatment was underway, our education began with their stellar doctors and nurses, and it began with this book.

The Barbara Davis Center serves 80% of Colorado's children with diabetes, and a good chunk of the world's population! It is internationally renowned and their platform for diabetes education comes straight out of this book.

Having attended our one week followup, we had the privilege of meeting Peter Chase who gave a quick speech on diabetes research, asking the parents to submit a blood sample for a current research study into the precursors of diabetes I. After that, I had a moment to thank Peter Chase for this amazing book and work. His answer was, "well, that book is 35 years of diabetes research", as if to imply that it wasn't just him, but the bottom line of millions of dollars and decades of study. He also advised that the 12th edition was going to print (as of 9-22-10).

Given that one of the top diabetes research and treatment facilities in the world uses this book as its curriculum, you can't go wrong with this one. Everything we were being taught and demonstrated came straight from this text.

While this book (or no other) is a substitute for one on one education and advice with regard to maintaining diabetes, it is the perfect augment to that education. It is unequivocally, the best.

This is a Great Book for teaching and learning Diabetes Concepts for newly diagnosed families

The "Pink Panther" book is excellent, readable, and comprehensive.

There are 2 versions of this title -- Understanding Diabetes is the full version, "A First Book for Understanding Diabetes" is the abridged version.

This reference book is easy to understand and provides step-by-step instructions for taking care of diabetes. I would recommend this book to a diabetic or a caregiver to a diabetic.
