Understanding Diabetes 10 th edition by H. Peter Chase,
By leslie sellars (Albany, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
I am a diabetes educator and this is the book I recommend to all the parents of a child that has diabetes. When a child is first diagnosed with diabetes the parents are overwhelmed with information and do not remember everything the nurse or doctor tells them and I find that this book gives all the information in a nut shell. It will also help answer the everyday questions of What "if". It is a excellent resource and gives very good examples of what the bloodsugar should be for each age, how much food to give for exercise, the action of insulin how to treat low blood sugar and what to do on days that your child is sick. etc. It gives pretty much all the information you need.

Older Onset Type 1,
This review is from: Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 24. This book was extremely helpful to me. It was not too simple for me and I read it several times. Now, as a medical student, I recommend it to patients of all ages as a great place to start learning about Type 1 DM. I have not encountered its equal.

The Diabetes Bible,
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
This book explains what you need to know if you/your child are newly diagnosed in an easy to understand language. We were given the book while our daughter was in the hospital, and even though we have many more books in our diabetes library now, this one has the most marked pages, and is definitely the one we read the most, especially in the first year.

My daughter Kate was diagnosed 3 years ago and this book has been my bible, especially during that critical 1st year. I've gone back to it time and time again to help me make the right decisions on managing Kate's diabetes. It's easy to read, easy to search and very helpful when solving problems. A must have for recently diagnosed (or parents of recently diagnosed).

This review is from: Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
A clear and well-organized manual for understanding and managing Type I diabetes. Covering virtually every aspect of diabetes care, Understanding Diabetes is practically a crash course in a single book. The book is easy to read and full of excellent illustrations and helpful equations and tables. Also a great resource for discussions with your diabetes care team.

Valuable resource on Type 1 Diabetes,
By Margaret P. "mhp2027" (Boulder, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
This book was written by Dr. Chase, at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, in Denver, Colorado. The book is very thorough yet easy to read, and contains everything you need to know, to treat your child's type 1 diabetes ("juvenile onset" or insulin dependent). I can't say enough good about it. Dr. Chase also has a book on insulin pumps, but that does not yet appear to be for sale through Amazon. That companion book helps you make an informed choice whether you should consider an insulin pump, and has a nice section on exercise (e.g., how your child can swim without having lows).

Mother of a child with diabetes,

This is THE BEST book to give anyone who is new to diabetes. It really helps explain diabetes in a way that's easy to understand by a child as well as a parent. My Daughter was Dianosed with Type 1 Diabetes on 1/27/04 when she was 17 months old only 6 months after she had open heart surgery. My mind was tired and worn out by everything that had gone on before her diagnosis with diabetes, and I was 3 weeks away from delivering my 2nd child. I needed something that was extremely easy to read as well as understand through all the stress I was dealing with, and this book that the UNM Hospital gave us was PERFECT. Anyone I know who is diabetic or knows someone who is, I highly suggest this book even if you don't deal with that person on a daily basis. It will help you to understand what that person is dealing with, and how to handle anything that may come up if you are with that person. It doesn't matter if you're type 1 or type 2 it does explain both conditions but it goes into more depth on type 1. Trust me, try this book. It can make a world of difference.
