Written by a photographer for photographers, Understanding Digital Photography explains not only how to do something in the world of digital photography but, more importantly, why it should be done! Straightforward, easy-to-understand explanations of critically important digital photography concepts are grounded in traditional photographic processes. This allows novices to gain an appreciation of the historical evolution of digital photography as they gain new skills while permitting experienced photographers to quickly bridge the gap between traditional and digital photographic mediums. Drawing upon insights gleaned from more than twenty (20) years of experience as a successful commercial and fine art photographer, the author places the utmost emphasis on equipping his readers with clear-cut explanations of digital photography techniques plus practical examples of how they apply to real-life situations. It is this no-nonsense approach to demystifying digital photography that makes Understanding Digital Photography a "must" for every student, hobbyist, and professional that wants to harness the power of this exciting technology and open new doors to creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable and comprehensive, January 31, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
This book provides very readable and very exhaustive coverage of many issues related to digital photography. It is not really a beginner's guide that explains how to use a digital camera (how to compose a photo, etc.). Serious photographers, as well as graphic artists, printers, etc. will greatly appreciate the extensive coverage of issues such as how digital cameras work; their advantages and problems; relationship of their output sizes to output sizes of film cameras (that is, aspect ratios), color management; Photoshop; output devices; types of scanners; and many other issues. I have studied these issues elsewhere and found this book added to my understanding. It provides a great foundation (and serves as a great reference) to help one intelligently consume additional information found in other books and magazines. The information is such that it will not be outdated quickly; nonetheless, I will look forward to successive editions.

By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
Understanding Digital Photography is a straightforward, easy-to-understand book that explores digital photography in an easy to understand way. Great book for those moving into digital photography, or those who just want to learn more about the digital darkroom. Also has a great chapter about copyright.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very practical introduction to digital photography !, September 9, 2004
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
This book is a very practical introduction to digital photography. I teach photography and use it as a text book. As for the one negative feedback item I see here, "A disaster", I would suggest you weigh the value of all of all of the other positive feedback items.

My students find the book to be quite easy to understand, and have expressed their pleasure with the constant comparisons between traditional and digital photography. They believe that this author's approach to digital photography allows for an easy understanding of the media, in context with photography as a whole. Also, I know of a number of other photography instructors that have chosen to use this book as their text at the College and University levels!

This book is a solid work for the budding digital photographer.
