Valuable and comprehensive,
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
This book provides very readable and very exhaustive coverage of many issues related to digital photography. It is not really a beginner's guide that explains how to use a digital camera (how to compose a photo, etc.). Serious photographers, as well as graphic artists, printers, etc. will greatly appreciate the extensive coverage of issues such as how digital cameras work; their advantages and problems; relationship of their output sizes to output sizes of film cameras (that is, aspect ratios), color management; Photoshop; output devices; types of scanners; and many other issues. I have studied these issues elsewhere and found this book added to my understanding. It provides a great foundation (and serves as a great reference) to help one intelligently consume additional information found in other books and magazines. The information is such that it will not be outdated quickly; nonetheless, I will look forward to successive editions.

Understanding Digital Photography--Two thumbs up!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
Understanding Digital Photography is a straightforward, easy-to-understand book that explores digital photography in an easy to understand way. Great book for those moving into digital photography, or those who just want to learn more about the digital darkroom. Also has a great chapter about copyright.

A very practical introduction to digital photography !,

This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
This book is a very practical introduction to digital photography. I teach photography and use it as a text book. As for the one negative feedback item I see here, "A disaster", I would suggest you weigh the value of all of all of the other positive feedback items. My students find the book to be quite easy to understand, and have expressed their pleasure with the constant comparisons between traditional and digital photography. They believe that this author's approach to digital photography allows for an easy understanding of the media, in context with photography as a whole. Also, I know of a number of other photography instructors that have chosen to use this book as their text at the College and University levels! This book is a solid work for the budding digital photographer.

Few books this comprehensive are at the same time entertaining to read. It's very easy to read as well, so the information is absorbed and retained. The illustrations are mostly in black & white. The photographs in the book are of high-quality and not like the typical copier-machine reproductions. I'm sure this would make an excellent classroom textbook, as it's a cut above the usually dry text you find in actual schools. It's very well written. Get this book and you won't need to take a class.

Easy to understand and Helpful,
By Katrin Eismann (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
As an instructor of Photography and Digital Imagaging, I have found it difficult to recommend texbooks that incorporate ALL the most important points of capturing, transmitting, printing, storing, archiving and copyright of digital images. I generally need to list several titles to cover these various topics. Understanding digital photography covers these in a very concise, logical and easy to comprehend manner. This book is timely, informative, accurate and thorough. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to jump into to the art and technique of digital photography. I especially praise its use for instructional value. I am replacing next year's text with this one.

This book makes the world of digital photography accessible to everyone. I especially like the way that the author compares digital photography to traditional photography throughout. Brilliant book for new or established photographers.

Very Interesting Approach to Digital Photography,
By William H. (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
Understanding Digital Photography has a very interesting approach to explaining digital photography. It is not the usual general photography book with the word "digital" thrown in for marketing. I like the way the author compares traditional photography with digital photography to explain the way things work in a logical way. This book is also not just a computer or technical book. It is easy to read, and I like that you do not need to read the chapters in order to understand the information.I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to understand more about Digital PHOTOGRAPHY.

A disaster,
By Myron Blume (La Quinta, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Digital Photography (Paperback)
I have read only 80 pages of this book and I had to stop. The authors lack of command of the English language is only exceeded by his inability to explain relatively simple concepts in plain language. There were so many errors of fact that I cannot comprehend how this got past the editors. Any eighth grader can tell you that 1600 x 2000 x 3 does not equal 5.76 million. All of this in the first 3 chapters where the author is still dealing with the basics. I cannot imagine what happens when he gets to the more complicated subjects. Avoid this book like the plague.

If you enjoy textbook-style books...,

If you enjoy textbook-style books, you will like this one. The author teaches the subject at a college and the influence of college textbooks is evident in this book.Biggest pluses of this book are its rather comprehensive coverage of digital photograhy, lots of text, and very few pictures as space fillers. This should be viewed as of a technical book of with emphasis on the digital aspects of ...digital photography.
