This practical and concise handbook provides a fascinating and intuitive look into the field of digital television. An ideal book for the nontechnical person, "Understanding Digital TV" provides step-by-step examples of the concepts and the principles behind broadcast media.

The simple but accurate treatment of the subject will give readers a sophisticated understanding of the field and better information with which to judge home purchases. Key features include: concise descriptions of television and radio broadcasting in easy-to-understand terms; insight into how a single worldwide TV standard can be achieved--despite apparently contrary developments in Europe, Japan, and America; comprehensive information on how new TV displays can be made more "watchable" and appealing; in-depth coverage of the strengths and weaknesses of competing technologies; insight into future developments in the field of broadcast media . . . and more!

Written for the novice, "Understanding Digital TV" will be of particular interest to producers, advertisers, and other media people who need to understand and communicate in the field of broadcast engineering.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that provides a lucid understanding of DTV, October 8, 1998

This review is from: Understanding Digital TV: The Route to Hdtv (Ieee Press Understanding Science & Technology) (Paperback)
The book is a really good one, and brings home the complicated concepts of Digital TV to the understanding of even a non-technical person.

However, the title is slightly misleading. It could be specified as a beginner's guide to Digital TV as the emphasis is on fundamental concepts more than detailed Technical aspects.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing and misleading, November 12, 2000

This review is from: Understanding Digital TV: The Route to Hdtv (Ieee Press Understanding Science & Technology) (Paperback)
Honestly, I was very disappointed after I read through this book. What drove me to buy this book (from the title of this book) was that I was expecting this book could introduce and explain some new concepts and new technologies which are widely used in digital broadcast industry now, such as digital compositing, nonelinear editing, MPEG, digital transmission etc. But what I got after I read this book? Only some rough images of some figures about digital signal, compression, and how to avoid flickering. I think the author of this book wasn't quite sure what kind of reader he aimed at. The book used too many analogies for technicians, but too many details for generic readers.(The author was trying to explain how to avoid CRT flickering through graphics, tables and equations in almost 50 pages, which I think is totally unnecessary for generic readers.) The book omited many important parts of digital TV. Perhaps, I was misleaded by the title of this book.
