5.0 out of 5 stars Open eyes to protect abuse February 17, 2014

I am really happy to collect this book and the topic of this book is related to the humanity. The author described every point in a simple but effective way. Some reviewer claims that this book is focused on women and children, but it's not true, every person may fall in abuse by others, but in this situation we have to protect those who are in a negative world like low class reviews. Everyone should read this to realize about humanity and protect innocents from unwanted situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every Penny! February 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a great book, one you will be able to refer to and dip into when needed. It is written in a simple way and easily understood. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular subject with top tips and methods to use with survivors. I would recommend this book for anyone working with survivors, but also to counselling students who will be able to learn more about relationship patterns, trauma, feelings and behavior surrounding the responses displayed and how best to manage them. I have read other books on the subject but feel that this one is a much easier to read. This book will increase your knowledge and give you a good base of skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read February 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found Kelina Cowell’s ‘Understanding Domestic Violence and Abuse’ soon after reading a memoir of a South African author who recalled how the abuse he had suffered during childhood negatively influenced the rest of his adult life. Make no mistake about it: domestic violence is a continuing kind of violence, and it can lead to a “branching out” of abusive acts if not met head-on. And thanks to Cowell’s book, there is finally hope in understanding how to deal with it.

Cowell’s book is perhaps one of the most comprehensive books written on the issue. The author provides not only a helpful discussion of what is considered domestic violence and abuse (DVA), it also gives a lot of actionable information that readers can use right away to deal when a case of DVA is encountered—either in a professional or personal setting. What’s more, the book is written in that informative, yet intimate tone that keeps the reading experience refreshing and at times even entertaining. The included case studies are particularly enlightening—if you or if you suspect that a loved one may be suffering from such an abuse, at least you get a solid idea of the helpful steps to counter it.

Overall, this is a book that may become more and more relevant as years wear on—we see a rise in the cases of DVA, and the only way to stop this trend is by being fully informed about what DVA is and what to do about it. Get a copy of this highly important book today—or better, send this as a gift to someone you know may use it. Who knows, you might save a life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great review of sensitive topic. February 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked up this book for free and read it. I was really surprised that this book had received negative reviews, but I think that this reviews were probably left by an abuser annoyed that someone might get access to the information contained within.

Bad reviews claim that this book only focuses on women and children, but that's not true at all. There is a case study of a man being abused by his girlfriend, as well as a gay couple engaging in abuse.

This book tells you how to identify the different types of abuse as well as offers tips and advice about what to do if you or someone you know is suffering from abuse. If you're interested, this is a great review on the topic. Also, please note that this book was written in the UK and has some information about laws pertaining to that country, so things may be different if you're in the USA.
