5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Equine Medications, February 6, 2002

This review is from: Understanding Equine Medications: Your Guide to Horse Health Care and Management (Horse Health Care Library) (Paperback)
Understanding Equine Medications is the handbook I have been waiting a lifetime for!!! I have been breeding and handling horses for the past 30 years, have spent countless dollars and too many frustrating moments when faced with a crisis and needed help. Many times our moments of crisis can be avioded IF we have the information we need, in laymans terms. Dr. Forney has produced an outstanding publication in providing much needed information for all horse owners, in all areas of horsemanship.

I now have the inside story on medications that I need, which could prevent a very costly mistake clearly due to lack of knowledge of medications and usage. This publication should relieve many veterinarians of middle of the night phone calls, prevent hysterical horse owners unusual amounts of gray hair, and most importantly, provide the horse with the care and help they need. Thank you Dr. Barbara Forney, you are a goddess!!
Dr. Forney is that rare individual that not only understands medication doseage, the history of medication, yet is an avid horse person herself. It is evident that this book provides us with USEFUL knowledge written from the perspective of someone who 'has been there' which carries great credibility and usefulness. Bravo, it rates a 10!

Sincerely ,

Jennifer H. Jones, Swift Level
Owner and breeder of Connemara/TB Crosses

This book is a "must have" for anyone owning horses. Packed with information from correct dosages to side effects, it is written so that anyone can benefit from the information in it. Drugs are listed by common name as well as medical name so its easy to find the information you need. I have used it many times since it was given to me and I highly recommend it to everyone owing horses - be one or 100.

(REAL NAME)
My new trainer recommended this book for me so when she was medicating or telling of different meds , all I had to do is look them up and have it told to me in simple words rather than some medical mumble jumble that vets used sometimes , This book will definitly be on the top shelf for quick and easy reference , I have other books about meds but this is THE BEST !! If I could give 10 stars it would get 11 This book takes all the guess work out of administering as well as dosege for different ages of horses.

Understanding Equine Medications is the perfect
book for all horsepeople. It is a thorough yet concise referance of all equine medications as well as some termonology. This book helps even those new to horses to understand prescription medications, drug interactions, side effects, and all home treatments. I suggest anyone who has ever pretended to comprehend their vet's jargon, to invest in this book, and understand for real!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile book for horse owners, September 14, 2007
I purchased this book partially because I felt, as a horse owner, I should have a basic understanding of the common medications used in horses, and also because I am very interested in veterinary medicine. Explains what each drug does (traq, NSAID, etc), the basics in how it works in the body, side effects, dosaging, use in breeding animals/foals/ponies/competition horses, and reactions it may have with other drugs. Not a book you would read for "fun," but a great one to have on hand when you need it.

Every horse owner should know a bunch about medicating horses, or shouldn't own one (or be owned by one). This is your ticket for learning, but I suggest you try your first flight at it with a vet on hand.
