Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a professionally finished needed publication and a testament to your ability to do things right. -- Neal W. Beaver, retired owner and editior of the Grand Marais Pilot newspaper, August 2004

About the Author

After a successful career in medical equipment marketing, the author decided to follow her passion and re-open the Gitche Gumee Agate Museum which had influenced her life-long passion for agates. The museum was closed for over 20 years when the founder, Axel Niemi, left Grand Marais, MI. After 13 months of intensive renovation, Karen re-opened the museum on July 4, 1999. In response to requests from thousands of museum visitors, Karen decided to develop this book to help rockhounds better understand and find agates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Agates February 19, 2008
I've been going to the U.P. since before there was a bridge. Stone collecting is one of my favorite "to do" things when traveling the Superior shore. Karen's book Understanding and Finding Agates is a "must have" if you wish to know the history, and to help you identify your new found treasures. I've been to Karen's "Museum", and have met her in person. A most wonderful, and knowledgeble person. Visit Grand Marais, Michigan, and say Hello to Karen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Understanding and Finding Agates November 3, 2006
Cover photo deceiving, appears to be a Spiral Bound book, but it was not.

Very general information, did not cover any of the Agates we have in our collection, (over 100).

The reason we purchased this was to identify them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Book is too superficial April 30, 2008

This book is OK for a generalized description of many types of agates. Photos are good. Information about where to find agates was less than I expected.
