Book Description

May 31, 1997
Surprisingly, there are few book-length studies available that approach the poems in Charles Baudelaireís collection on an individual basis. Understanding "Les Fleurs du Mal" fills this gap by providing students and serious readers with clear, scholarly "explications" to many of the most widely read of Baudelaire's poems.

Editorial Reviews

Review

An original and valuable contribution to Baudelaire studies . . . The selection of poems is thoughtful, including both well-known and well-anthologized pieces, as well as lesser-known works, and the essays are supported by excellent and pertinent bibliographies.
--Sima Godfrey University of British Columbia

5.0 out of 5 stars essential reading, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Understanding "Les Fleurs du Mal": Critical Readings (Paperback)
A "must read" for anyone seeking a deeper understand of the book that launched modern poetry. There are 16 articles by well-known Baudelaire scholars, all insightful and beautifully written. I certainly cannot say that I agree with the interpretations put forward in every case -- no surprise -- but I learned a lot from them (e.g., Nina Tucci's take on "La Vie anterieure") and was led to rethink my own views in some cases, which I suppose is the most we can expect.
