Good text book for Dr.'s Ofc, but not for Health Facilities,
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Professional Billing (Paperback)
If you are attempting to process "Professional" Health Insurance claims for a Doctor's Office (Form HCFA-1500) this is a good learning text. Includes a diskette for taking tests on your PC. However, there is no information on processing UB-92 Facility and Institutional claims.

I am taking a CPT coding class and my teacher is Ms.Rowell herself. I am so very pleased with this book, for it gives you step by step instructions in a very detailed manner. The layout is terrific, and the examples given in the book give you a sinerio that helps you put a real life situation into perspective. I have not found a better book that explains health insurance. If you are working in a "billing" environment, you should have this book.

Very misleading,

I purchased this book with the accompanying workbook. Although it may contain good information, the answers are not provided to the exercises--in either the book or workbook. Apparently, a separate instructor's manual needs to be purchased. When spending [the money] for both books, I didn't even think that answers would not be provided, much less that I'd have to spend [more money] to get them. I'd recommend the book, workbook, and instructor's manual, unless you're taking a class that allows you to check to make sure you understand the concepts.I'm not sure why I don't have voting buttons--I read every review here before I submitted mine.

I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.

LEARN HEALTH PROVIDER CODING,
By Kate Wright (Southfield, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Professional Billing (Paperback)
This text, workbook, and instructor's manual - which has the answers :-) - are very well put together, easy to follow and thoroughly cover the usual procedures of coding and touch on many hard-to-code ones. I found the history section informative and much as I wanted to get to the coding work, very thorough and very interesting. There are many questions throughout the lessons that very are well thought out and follow the text extremely well and reinforce what you have just read. This set of instructional manuals will really help you learn this subject.

Errors Galore,
This review is from: Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Professional Billing (Paperback)
After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!! From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts. I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text. When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not. Not worth the money or the time. Extremely exhausting.

you will need more than just this book to benefit,
By Medical Billing Student "Jan" (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Professional Billing (Paperback)
The book is made to sound as if it would be all you need to become a Medical Billing/Health Insurance specialist. Not a chance. You will need the most current coding manuals to even attempt to complete this course. And even then without the answers you have no way to check your progress. There must be better books, Keep Searching

Comprehensive Instruction Material for Beginner Coders and Billers,

This review is from: Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Billing and Reimbursement (Paperback)
Medical coding and billing continuously evolve in large part because insurance companies and providers have conflicting business goals. An effective biller must go beyond simple claim submission and discover the reasons for underpayments and denials, to solicit missing information from both providers and payers, and follow up on every claim until its full payment.
Rowell's and Green's Guide provides an ideal introductory didactic set of materials covering everything from history of health care reimbursement, major insurance companies, and federal health care legislation, to basic knowledge of national diagnosis and procedure coding rules, to complex topics, such as V-codes, and diagnosis code linking. The text is replete with examples and exercises, helping students understand and remember the needed materials. Great Textbook, good explanatory sections. Instructor's book not as clear as needed with daily plans, I found it a bit cumbersom, wrote my own class plans and outline. But the textbook was concise, and constructed in a good methodic manner that allowed personal adaptation.
