Book Description

June 1, 2007
This authoritative discussion of horses’ psychological and emotional needs will change your perception of human-horse interaction forever.  Author Lesley Skipper asserts that a new perception of horses as thinking, feeling creatures is not a matter of sentimentality, but of ethical responsibility. Skipper presents the latest training techniques, methods to help your horse cope with the demands of training and competition, the different approaches required for different breeds, ways to deal with the stress of travel and transportation, ethical techniques for correcting bad habits and behavior, and more. This guide, quite simply, will propel you toward a happier, healthier relationship with your horse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Title somewhat misleading, August 12, 2007
This review is from: Understanding Horse Behavior: An Innovative Approach to Equine Psychology and Successful Training (Paperback)
I got this book in hopes that it would explain how to "read" a horse and what certain reactions or movements by horses meant, but it really doesn't at all. It really is just a very general book about the nature of horses based on what they would naturally do in the wild. If you're looking for specific information about training or riding or bonding with your horse, or reading him, this book will not help. If you want to learn more about what is more natural for a horse, such as how it is fed, how much foraging it is allowed to do, then there is some info. here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and attractive book, May 3, 2007
This review is from: Understanding Horse Behavior: An Innovative Approach to Equine Psychology and Successful Training (Paperback)
What I love about this book are the beautiful photographs and illustrations. Yes, it has lots of great information, good insights into horse behavior, and very helpful training tips, but the best parts are the excellent full-color photos of horses who are clearly happy, healthy, and willingly in tune with their owners, as well as the diagrams that show things such as proper riding technique. It's also refreshing to find a horse training book that has a good balance between practicality and the pure joy of relating to animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction for new horse owners, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Understanding Horse Behavior: An Innovative Approach to Equine Psychology and Successful Training (Paperback)
Offering an innovative, successful, 'user friendly' approach to understanding the behavior of horses and the successful training of them, "Understanding Horse Behavior" provides horse owners with effective training techniques, expert insights into the equine world, and invaluable instructions on helping a horse cope with and adjust to the rigorous demands of training and competition. Of special note is what horse breeding and training expert Lesley Skipper has to saw on helping a horse to deal with the stress of travel and transportation, as well as ethical techniques for correcting bad habits and behavior in horses. Enhanced throughout with full color photography, "Understanding Horse Behavior" is the perfect introduction for new horse owners, and a strongly recommended addition to community library Pets & Wildlife reference collections.
