Book Description

10 and upUnderstanding the Human Body
The immune system, which protects the body from invading microorganisms, and helps repair injuries, is composed of several lymphoid organs, sites where specialized immune cells are produced. This book describes the various lymphoid organs and explains the roles of each in defending the body. It also examines diseases and disorders that result when the immune system malfunctions, as well as current and future medical technologies involved in diagnosis and treatment of those illnesses. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Pam Walker and Elaine Wood's The Digestive System.

Gr. 8-12. Informative, accurate, and up-to-date, these titles in the Understanding the Human Body series look closely at the anatomy and physiology of a body system: what the individual parts do, how they work together, and also what happens when things go wrong. The style is dense and somewhat dry, but the authors are experienced junior-high and high-school science teachers who know what works in the biology classroom and for student research. One of the best sections in Digestive System considers diagnostic technology. The Immune System has an excellent discussion of HIV and how AIDS epitomizes the ruin of immune system function. Both books include occasional black-and-white photos and diagrams, a glossary, and an annotated bibliography. Hazel Rochman

Review

"This volume is valuable for its explanation of how each different cell type functions to aid the immune system as a whole. It also provides a clear description of what is actually happening when someone is having an allergic reaction."

"These clearly written overviews give basic facts about these systems... Many statistics are given making these books useful for reports... The diagrams...are well labeled and aid understanding. Students needing report materials will find these books helpful."
