From the Back Cover

Finally... a down-to-earth introduction to ATM for communications professionals and business decision-makers Many experts predict that ATM-asynchronous transfer mode-will have the same kind of far-reaching impact on the way companies do business that local area networks have had. Here is the accessible overview of ATM technology you've been waiting for, complete with practical information to help you evaluate this hot technology and make strategic decisions that will benefit your business. In the reader-friendly style that has made his previous books bestsellers, author Stan Schatt offers valuable insights into practical implementations of ATM, providing detailed case studies that show you how today's leading companies are putting ATM to use. Focusing on product families and vendor product architecture, he gives you a helpful overview of ATM product directions. This pragmatic guide is organized into two main sections, beginning with an examination of key concepts aimed at readers with no prior background. It will introduce you to essential details about local area networks, virtual networks, and wide area network technology. The second half of the book looks at specific vendors' network architecture, ATM products and plans, and their vision of a switched ATM enterprise environment. Find out why ATM is so effective for multimedia... what questions you should ask when you talk to ATM vendors... what the status of wide area ATM is... what the major ATM products on the market are and how they differ... where you can learn more about ATM... and more.

Stan Schatt's ATM book is brilliant! I've made this required reading for everyone in my Global One Network Design & Management group - Mr. Schatt is a unique author with the ability to take very complex technical subjects and present them in easy to digest morsels.
I have also recommended his other books on LANs & Telecommunications Management to senior commercial & business managers, here in Europe who are looking for an easy to understand reference.
"Understanding ATM" is a must read for anyone in the telecomm business who plans to remain on the leading edge in the future!
