Book Description

November 24, 2008 0470392231 978-0470392232 5
This book walks psychologists through the study of motivation, exploring all conditions that exist within the person and within the environment and culture that explain why we want what we want and why we do what we do. The fifth edition expands on theoretical ideas further into practical applications, especially in the areas of education, work, therapy, sports, and the home. Each chapter features a chapter box that addresses a specific concern. At the end of each chapter is a list of recommended readings for further study. Psychologists will discover a number of new ideas, including achievement goals, personal strivings, types of extrinsic motivation, implementation intentions, and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars BORING but loaded with knowledge., April 10, 2011

This review is from: Understanding Motivation and Emotion (Hardcover)
I will have to admit this is one of the most boring text books I have ever read. Roughly 460 actual pages to read and I believe 1 picture, it is a dense textbook. I love psychology and motivation is an interesting topic which is why I took the course (plus it is required for my degree), my enthusiasm for the subject is why I think my review is so positive considering how dry this information presented is. Here is the truth, boring but filled with knowledge and presented in an understandable fashion. This book could easily be used in graduate level courses instead of undergraduate. My professor did make us read the whole book in a 10 week course but was honest with the information we needed to retain and know for our exams. If he hadn't done that I would have been discouraged simply because of the amount of knowledge presented. Overall one of the best text books I have ever had the privilege of reading, lol, but still boring.

I hope that helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, June 7, 2009

I read a lot of psychology books. This book is fantastic. Johnmarshall Reeve has a genuine talent to explain delicate subjects elegantly -- and with humor. A very complete manual, totally worth the hefty tag price. Recommended to anyone interested in psychology -- a great read for parents too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!, March 10, 2011

I purchased this book for my elective class for my Master's degree as a required reading but loved it so much I am sending it to my mother to read for enjoyment purposes as well. It is not only a text book but has some great insights as to what to do to just help you change your own way of thinking and living and how to motivate yourself and others on the job and in life in general. It is easy to read, grabs your attention, and keeps you captivated. It is not like reading a text book at all. This book will stay on my shelves for a lifetime.
