This review is from: Understanding The Old Man and the Sea: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series) (Hardcover)
Valenti's casebook helped me understand "Old Man and the Sea" by explaining the authors life and environment at the time of the books conception. With detailed research, maps and images I could better grasp what the author was writing about. To me this book made all the difference in the world in my understanding what I read and made Hemingway far less intemidating. This book doesn't try to cheat by telling you a "Cliff Notes" summary of the story, but is an actual accessory to better understanding the novel, written by an expert in the field.
