This is one of the few text books I enjoyed from a long list of related computer science books I have read for college. I would not recommend this as an intro to computers for the casual reader. The text goes into great detail about the many aspects of an operating system by providing abstract concepts and exact algorithms. The book helps explain what goes on behind the scenes of the hardware and the system and helped me understand some of the concepts of OSes that seem mysterious.

If you have a passion for computers or need a good supplemental text for a class, then I would highly recommend this. If you are a novice computer user looking to learn more about computer in general, then I would start with something else.
