Understanding Shakespeare: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

Everyone should be familiar with the timeless works of William Shakespeare. Now with Understanding Shakespeare, everyone can! This Tragedy Series brings four of Shakespeare’s greatest plays to life, with the skilled help of classically trained actors and internationally renowned Shakespearean scholars. Key scenes are acted, analyzed and interpreted throughout the plays. Insightful comments help explain meaning, characters, motives, background action and plot. Whether or nor you’ve read Shakespeare before, this program is the best way to understand, appreciate and enjoy the majesty of his greatest tragedies.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark<br />Considered by many authorities as Shakespeare’s greatest play, Hamlet may also be the most representative character in all-dramatic literature. It’s a classic tragedy of a young prince torn by indecision. “To be or not to be? That is the question” for a grief-stricken hero caught in the toils of countless dangers. Revenge, nobility, and honor are the quintessential elements of one of Shakespeare’s great masterworks.

Hamlet is a story I relate to personally. I grew up under very similar conditions. This effort is decent introduction to those who have seen it and seek a more in depth understanding. However, it has a style that is jumbled, at times it discusses the acts, out of place. It is difficult to adequately convey the depth of emotional turmoil Hamlet is feeling. It is something completely ensconced within its own sphere. I felt the effort was genuine and informative. The scenes reenacted in order to refresh those familiar: or provide background context to those unfamiliar; to the story was very basic. It did the job, but was very bland in its depiction. Admittedly, I truly understand the conflict of an overwhelming internal calling need to avenge while attempting to hold onto decency and honest justice. My personal favorite attempt is the one with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close. I would recommended it with the stipulation it is nothing more than limited effort. Amazon delivered this as well as the movie Hamlet, in great condition and swiftly. But that is nothing new. Amazon is a fantastic company and a pleasure to do business with.
