Very well written book. Excellent book for those who have a desire or need to learn SONET/SDH and applications in detail. All you need to do is to read it - author gives you everything you need to know to thoroughly understand presented material. The author takes a reader to a journey to explore SONET from every side.

One does not need to have background or experience in order to understand the concepts and details. Author presents the material in a very clear and comprehensive matter, giving detailed, step-by-step explanations and examples, yet providing necessary background for those who may have lack of it. The figures/pictures are well explained so that the reader is certain of their meaning.

The book is written in a very professional and structured way. Each chapter has a list of objectives that author sets for to reader to accomplish after completing the chapter. Then a brief outline is provided, followed by description of various concepts from high level to the very low level. Book is good for those who need to know things 5000 km above the Earth, and even better for those who need to explore the depths of the ocean. It is very informative. Readers from different backgrounds will find everything they need to know about SONET/SDH in a very easy to understand matter. Book is full of examples and detailed explanations. At the end of each chapter there is a list of review questions, so that the reader can check him/herself with the answer key included at the end of the book. Moreover the author includes the list of the abbreviations and acronyms, so the reader can have everything in one book. The author did an excellent job of putting together a very complex topic in a very easy to understand language.

In summary, I would highly recommend this book for any body who wishes to learn SONET/SDH. It is a great reference book as well. It would also serve very well as an excellent textbook for a SONET class.

"Understanding SONET/SDH : Standards and Applications" provides an in-depth coverage of this rapidly expanding field of telecommunications. The material is presented in a manner that is easy to follow, yet provides sufficient detail to serve as a reference for basic network design and implementation. Being involved in telecommunications system engineering activities, I frequently use this book to supplement documents published by ITU and other standards organizations. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of SONET/SDH theory, the author also provides numerous examples of how these concepts are applied in the field environment. If you are a network planner, design engineer, marketing representative, or student, this book should certainly be part of your personal telecommunications library.

GREAT technical reference text - the best on topic matter out there. Choppy reading due to poor editing, but overall, EXCELLENT content on SONET/SDH. Lots of technical details - most thorough text available.

This text serves as an excellent reference as well as introduction to SONET/SDH. It is the most thorough and technically detailed book available on the topic matter. The author clearly is an expert in the field. Only area of improvement would be in the editting - however, despite this, the book is a "must-own" for anyone requiring or desiring knowledge of SONET/SDH. Would highly recommend it.

Excellent book. Very detailed. Match for begginers and for experienced readers. Contains excellent self-tests that help clarify your own understanding.

This is by far the best SONET/SDH reference book I have ever seen. It contains a lot of detail, yet presents them in an easy-to-follow manner. This is the book to SONET/SDH as Stevens' TCP/IP Illustrated volumes to TCP/IP. My only complaint is there are quite a few typos, and there is some error wrt to the explanation of DS1(T1) extended super-frame and robbed-bit signaling, which is very minor.

If you do not want to read all the SONET/SDH related ITU-T, ANSI specification, this book is probably the best book to give you a clear picture of key concepts.

This book is far too poorly edited to be of use to many people. The text rambles and jumps around and there are numerous errors. The author repeatedly obscures his points with too many forward and backward references that are misleading and unnecessary. The style of English is very difficult to follow and renders whole paragraphs meaningless.

A complete description of SONET. Extremely detailed. Not recommended for someone who only wants a high-level view of SONET. And not recommended for people like gogo@aol.com who probably didn't want to take the time to understand the subject matter!

A thorough and technical treatment of SONET/SDH. It explains the intricacies of this comlex technology in a clear-to-follow manner. A must-have reference book for telecommunications professionals.
