Book Description

January 1, 1995
A resource designed not only for Church leaders, but also for the "rank and file" Episcopalians to help them "inwardly digest" the foundation of our common life- the Sunday Scriptures. We explain the Scriptures cogently, yet devotionally and comprehensively.

This resource will prepare you for the Sunday Readings.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Summaries of the Sunday lessons have long been available for the Episcopalian worshiper in the pew, and a large number of lectionary textual studies exist for the person preparing to preach on the Sunday lessons, but this new venture seems more substantial than any of these existing efforts." -- Peter J. Gomes, "The Good Book" (Publishers Weekly Religion Bestseller)

More About the Author

The Rev. Dr. H. King Oehmig, an Episcopal priest, is the founder of Read Mark Press (www.ReadMarkPress.com) and Editor-in-Chief of Synthesis Publications (www.Synthesispub.com).

The Chattanooga-based company is publisher of the three-volume lay commentary Understanding the Sunday Scriptures: A Companion to the Revised Common Lectionary (Years A, B, and C). The Year C volume was recently released in 2009, completing this unique set of lectionary resources.

Oehmig is also author of Between the Lines: Reflections on the Gospels Through the Church Year and Beyond the Words: Insights on the Gospels Through the Church Year. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the School of Theology at the University of the South. Mr. Oehmig has also served parishes in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia over the last 30 years in addition to his writing life. After retiring from coaching high school golf at Baylor School in Chattanooga, where he garnered 21 TSSAA titles over 12 years and was named USA Coach of the Year in Girls' Golf in 2007, Oehmig was recently appointed to the faculty of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, as Interim Men's Golf Coach.

Answering the need for balanced, yet inspiring, Bible study, the three-volume Understanding the Sunday Scriptures is unprecedented as a contribution to available lay Christian education resources. It follows the Revised Common Lectionary, and includes reflection and discussion material for every possible Sunday in the Church Year, and is unmatched for preparing the informed lay person for weekly worship. It also has been of great benefit to Bible study groups, for the homebound, and as a gift to Christian education teachers, and newcomers.

The Episcopal Church adopted the RCL as its standard lectionary in 2006. Many congregations of other denominations such as Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Roman Catholics also follow the RCL to various degrees in their worship. In addition, individual congregations from the free church tradition often adopt the RCL as an ecumenical act of fellowship (http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/faq2.php).
