2.0 out of 5 stars Understanding The Times
I ordered this book for a college class. What I found was that the book comes in numerous editions both unabridged and abridged. The main difference between this version and the current unbridged version is number of pages and that the author has separated out the New Age movement into an Appendix in later editions. Overall I think the book is good for a basic...

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb comparison of the prevailing worldviews of our age!, July 24, 2000
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
A comprehensive, yet easy to understand survey of the prevailing worldviews of our day. This is the definitive reference to understanding the ideas and forces shaping our times. David Noebel rather objectively compares and contrasts the Christian, Marxist/Leninist, Secular Humanist and New Age worldviews. By comparing and contrasting the prevailing worldviews of our time, it helps you to clarify your own worldview. It also gives the reader clearer insight into the world view bias that are shaping a New World Order. Recommended to Christians and anyone desiring to better understand their worldview. This book isn't one you just read and 'shelf away', its valuable as an excellent reference title which I regularly consult. Good reference for philosophy students as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book everyone should own., April 21, 1999
By
This is the sort of book everyone - and I mean everyone - should own and read. Are you aware of the hidden beliefs and assumptions that shape how others teach you, tell you in news media, and try to influence you? Probably not. That's why this is a superb resource.

Dr. Noebel takes a wide variety of educational topics and compares the three major worldviews today (Christianity, Marxism, and Secular Humanism), showing the basis and logical interrelationships for each, and how each looks at the evidence.

PS: I can quibble with a few points, and I'm sure other informed Christians could also add their own observations... but when you see people expressing hatred and fear of this book and then claim to be a Christian while everyone else loves it, what does that tell you? If the Enemy hates it, it must be good! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing study, July 27, 2004

Doc. Noebel did a vast amount of research to put together this book. Everything he says about each worldview he backs up with quotes right from the people who are significant in that worldview. Much of what he says about, say, secular humanism comes right out of the humanist manifestos 1 and 2. This book is an awesome resource for anyone who wants to understand worldviews, and the conflict between them that is going on in this country right now.

I highly recommend this book as an EXCELLENT tool and resource for use in the equipping of the Christian in the defense of his or her faith-- the Biblical Christian Worldview. I agree with D. James Kennedy, who states that the mastery of this book would be more helpful than a college education!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and full of information for the searching., November 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
I was required to read this book as a part of my Western Philosophy class in school. It was a little difficult to understand, but the information in it is wonderful. I am still using it for apologetics in my college classes, and in my personal life. I'd recomend it for the person who wants to understand how their Christian beliefs are true, and how to present them to the public.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Our Downfallen home, February 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
Although this book is to deep for most Christians, I urge all who are to read it. Since our world is constantly bombarded with the media, liberals, and other members of the unthinking; the mind has practically no choice but to listen. Unfortunately, many of the foolish thoughts of our world have been successful in installing themselves in the minds of our children (and adults who are foolish enough to believe them) because of the weakening of logic in the United States due to the abscence of truth being told in our schools, our television sets, from leaders in society, etc., etc., etc. This book not only shows the illogical thoughts and views of the three major worldviews in Western Civilization, (Marxist/Leninism, Secular Humanism, and Cosmic Humanism)but literally proves the truth in Christianity by showing the abscsence of depth in the 10 disciplines for all three worldviews all explained in Christianity in thorough detail. Even liberals and other members of these religions would be hard pressed to find any wrong said in this book because when all is said and done there is no other explanation but our God and savior--- Jesus Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clearly lays the foundations of today's cultural battles, November 4, 1999
Effectively compares and contrasts secular humanism, Marxism and Chrisitianity. It sets the roadmap to where these three worldviews lead. Firmly establishes how humanism and Marxism have set the U.S. on a splippery slope to an immoral, socialist society. I understand why liberals don't like this book, it exposes them for what they stand for.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book clearly talks about all of today's religions, May 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
After taking a course in school based on this book, and David Noebel's ideas, I feel more prepared to face the "real world". This book completely and thoroughly talks about all religions that are prevelant in society today (comparing them all to Biblical Christianity) and does a convincing job on why Christianity is the way to go. The best book in the area of apologetics we have seen in a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, September 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
I attended the Summit Leadership Seminar which this book is the main text for and found it very eye opening. It helped me understand where I stand as a Christian and why. Although I don't agree with everything the book has to say, there is a lot of truth in it. For the most part, it is a great reference book to use for papers and speeches in high school/college, and I highly recommend it to everyone, regardless of age. It is great for helping you see how you can take a stand for your beliefs and how to carry through with them. If you know why you believe what you believe, leadership is inevitable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought prevoking and wonderfully written, November 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding the Times (Hardcover)
I never understood exactly how world views fit together, and where my religion fit in. This book does a wonderful job of explaining and answering questions, and I would also recomend the seminar Summit Ministries, taught by the author, Dr. David A Noebel to further the understanding. Very good. Thank you.
