Bible Scholar and Convention Speaker Ken Ham wrote this book to address one of the most crucial issues in Christianity today, and that is the lack of faith among the newest generations of Christians that the first 11 chapters of the Book of Genesis are factual historical accounts, and not fantasies. Ken highlights the need for parents to teach these foundation beliefs to their children, and he carefully and clearly explains exactly what to teach them to counteract the lies that they are learning in today's godless public schools. Ken does this by focusing on the doctrines and facts supporting Biblical Creationism rather than Darwinian Evolution.

Thankfully, Ken also addresses the fact that many of the churches are losing their membership because the pastors of many traditional mainstream churches are not teaching the importance of having a Biblical Worldview. Many new pastors coming out of the seminaries don't believe in a Biblical Worldview because they aren't being taught how important it is, or of the importance of being born-again by the Holy Spirit. They don't know that this isn't automatic upon professing belief in Christ, but can only happen when we have a correct view of Who Jesus/Yeshua is - namely the ONLY Son of God made flesh Who died for our sins and rose from the dead to give us victory over sin, death, demons and the devil.

The reason I took away one star is because Ken doesn't seem to see the need to teach how to be born-again. But without the Holy Spirit, we will NOT receive ongoing spiritual instruction and the physical and spiritual regeneration that is necessary to prepare us for everlasting life.

Ken Ham provides a concise, thoughtful, rational, and scripturally sound explanation as to of why 21st Century Christians find themselves 'ill-prepared' to counter the present day secularist/rationalist movement and its adherents! A quick and easy read that will challenge every believer in Christ to re-examine 'why they believe what they believe', while providing a strong foundation built on rock for defending our traditional values, beliefs and faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book February 10, 2014

Loved Ken Ham's explanation of why society is where it is today concerning it's view of the Bible and it's belief in God, as well as his challenge of how to see those views and beliefs changed. It left me wanting to read more and I was surprised how quickly it ended. Good read for any Christian who is wondering about creationism vs evolution and some other popular belief systems. Gives the basics.

The author goes into detail about the issues facing the church. His main concern is the percentage of believers who leave the faith by the time they leave college and he presents a good case for why it is happening so often. Overall a good read. Very informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Battlefield is Drawn February 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ken Ham caught my attention with the debate. People in my church thought he could have used a few more uppercuts to make his points land home. When I watched it, I could see that his issue wasn't winning the debate but was using the forum to sow the seed of the word. I ordered "Understanding the Times" to get more insight into the man and came away with strategic insight about the spiritual battles we fight. The issue has been "the word of God" ever since Darwin's ideas became a wedge to separate the believer from total confidence in that word. That is why Ken Ham fights the battle of the integrity of Genesis. Ken, keep fighting the good fight.

On a side note, I was in school after reading the book, with some 6th graders who were studying the Declaration of Independence. They were asked to define, in their own words, who "the Supreme Judge of the world" was. Most wrote Supreme Judge, along with some congresses, supreme court and King of England. Not one of them could recognize that the Declaration was referring to God. "Understanding the Times" became very real at that moment.

This isn't an issue that I had considered to be of such importance. As the father of young children, I will be addressing the accuracy of the Bible as a history book and the Word of God.

I would have liked a few examples of how to answer someone using these arguments. Would love to read more of their books and like to see training books on he subjects for homeschoolers.
