Editorial Reviews

Review

Paula Hall has tackled the oft dismissed issue of sexual addiction by packing this text with clear insight, compassion and solid clinical knowledge. It is a must have for anyone wishing to truly understand the diagnosis, and treatment of sexual addiction. - Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S, Founding Director of the Sexual Recovery Institute and Author of Cruise Control

This book is a competent and intelligent exposition of the subject of sexual addiction, suitable for general readers and essential for clinicians. Written from a British perspective , it will be of considerable interest to a wider reading public. Paula Hall is a fresh voice with stimulating insights. - Dr Thaddeus Birchard, Clinical Director, The Marylebone Centre

"This book is important as a first publication from a UK perspective. Its strength is in its structure and organisation and in the journalistic, not academic, language; these make the book accessible to both the professional and the layman. Her language is intelligent, the bibliography is wide-ranging, and the list of resources is an important appendix." - Sandra Buchanan, Addiction Recovery Foundation (May/June 2013)

"A book to quell the skeptics and provide education, assessment tools, treatment options, and most importantly, hope, for both health-care providers and individuals struggling with a sex addiction." - Elsie Hall, Womens Mental Health

Paula Hall, a British registered psychotherapist with 12 years of practice in the field of sex and pornography addiction, authors Understanding and Treating Sex Addiction. According to Hall, this publication is the first and only book on sex addiction produced in the United Kingdom. Hall’s intended audience is people who struggle with sexual addiction and those who want to help them although, at times, she teeters on the verge of social, political, spiritual, and technological targeting.

Early in the text, Hall establishes a contextual framework for understanding and identifying sexual addiction through the lenses of various potential behavioral inductions including opportunity, attachment, and trauma. Within this framework, Hall provides her own case examples, vignettes, and results of personal and UK surveys to explain the various ways sexual addiction impacts the dependant individual, their partner, their children, and the society at large. Hall’s explanation of her clients’ sexual addiction and recovery is written about in a careful, sensitive, empathetic, and non-stigmatizing manner. Hall’s attention to the challenges and needs of not only her addicted clients and those in recovery, but of also her clients’ affected partners, children, family, and friends is a definite strength of this publication. In this light, Hall’s book serves as a good resource for rebuilding and maintaining pro-social, supportive relationships. While this commentary provided some added substance, I felt that Hall relied too heavily upon qualitative analysis to formulate her broader opinions, particularly when discussing developmental psychology, etiology, treatment options, and relapse prevention.
