2.0 out of 5 stars Review Book
Concise version of the regular book; only has a few, old-fashioned images to illustrate concepts. Unless you can find this for $40 or less, you might as well spend the money on Edelman's latest ultrasound physics book.
At least, that's what I did after skimming through this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars It really is about ultrasound physics..., March 22, 2002
First, we have used this concise and understandable text in our cardiovascular technology program for some years, and recommend it for sonographers readying themselves for the registry exam.

Second, in response to the rather fussy reviewer from Hawaii, those of us in this field who use ultrasound for diagnostic studies take an exam called "Physics" to obtain certification. The book is meant to help those people to prepare for that exam. Therefore, the title is pretty much right on the money.

I usually advise students (and others preparing for the exam) to use the Edelman text along with another ultrasound physics text, such as the Kremkau or Zagzebski, in order to nail all of the test-taker's blind spots.

NOTE! Some rascals are selling the OLD 2nd edition of this text, the purple one, for absurdly high prices. Get the 3rd edition, the bronze one, which is vastly improved over the older one, and brand new it will cost less than these grossly inflated prices. All respect to Sid Edelman, that one is okay, but not a collector's item.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent basic physics for ultrasonographers, July 29, 1999
By A Customer
I used this book for my physics class during ultrasound training......I found it an excellent book for the basic, up front, ultrasound physics. Lots of pictures and illustrations to help with understanding each concept. Review questions are at the end of each chapter as well as at the end of the book.

Excellant pre-study for the ARDMS registry and is very applicable to the real world of scanning. A must book for the study of ultrasonography physics.

4.0 out of 5 stars short, sweet, and concise, November 7, 2004
By
i've attended an edelman seminar. he's a fine teacher and has mastered the art of concision and snappy presentations. this old (1996) purple book goes into no more detail than needed to pass the RDMS exam. at the seminar, edelman said "you need to master these concepts; the seminar isn't magic. don't memorize them, KNOW them." the book functions the same way, especially if you work with the questions on each section, which are excellent.

he has just published the new very expanded version for $79 at www.esp-physics.com. i'm sure it's good, but a whole sonography class at my school passed the RDMS board with the purple one.

if you want to find out how many pixels fit on the end of a pin, you could read the pegasus physics books. they are what my teacher had us get. we ALL (14 of us) hate them. i should sell my pegasus books on amazon.com, but i think i'd rather build a bonfire with them. i know frank miele's (the author's) physics is more pure and much less of a registry-driven package, but if you ask frank miele what time it is, he builds you a clock. and not just any clock, but an atomic clock, and then a grandfather clock, and then one of those ones out of paper you stack and fold, and then a swiss watch. i could get all this, perhaps, if the writing were better and the organization of the book were much more coherent BUT IT'S NOT AND IT'S NOT. REALLY not. so go with edelman. rah.

you ask sid edelman what time it is and he shows you his wristwatch. if you don't get it he quickly clarifies how to tell time. that's it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Focused, Easily Understood Physics Review, November 25, 2002
By A Customer
This text was the only book that I used to study for my physics
exam and I passed the first time! It was easy to understand and
the Q&A with explanations really helped me nail my registry. I
have recommended this text to my co-workers who are still trying
to pass the exam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent physics review, November 18, 1998
By A Customer
Presents ultrasound physics in a straight-forward manner that makes reviewing and integrating the information more useful. Question/answer sections increase the reader's awareness of strengths and weaknesses. If you can't make it to an Edelman seminar, the book will be a wonderful second choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes it no harder than it needs to be, November 19, 2003
By A Customer
The best! By providing information in a concise and straight forward manner, it is possible to understand ultrasound physics. As the other reviewer stated, Edelman's seminars are superb, this is the best book out there by far. It just can't compare with his seminars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Study Resource for the SPI Exam, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Understanding Ultrasound Physics, Third Edition (Textbook Binding)
This review is for the 3rd Edition of Edelman's Understanding Ultrasound Physics. As Mr. Ridgeway noted in his review, this book has a bronze cover and is the most recent edition.

Dr. Edelman presents the concepts in an orderly manner. Each chapter is a building block to the next. He words the material in a way that the average person can understand. Many ultrasound physics texts use terminology and principles which are far more technical, detailed and complex than necessary. Not this one!

I completely disagree with the reviewer who commented that Dr. Edelman advises that material be memorized and regurgitated. Edelman carefully and thoughtfully highlights important information that WILL be presented on the ARDMS SPI boards. Additionally each chapter is accompanied by review questions AND a comprehensive Exam Review at the back of the textbook.

**As a classroom instructor and tutor of ultrasound physics, I believe that "practice makes perfect." One of the the MOST VALUABLE features of this text is Edelman's Free X-Zone Offer. This can be found on the page before the Preface. It offers FREE access for 14 days to a bank of mock test questions. If you purchase this text, locate this page immediately, complete the form, and mail it! You will have 3 months to activate the exam.**

If you require more practice after the X-Zone exercises, I recommend trying "Appleton & Lange Review for the Ultrasonography Examination."

I have been using this textbook for five years. My students (and I) treasure this book. Thank you Dr. Edelman for helping us truly grasp the concepts of ultrasound physics and instrumentation!
