More About the Author

William joined Ofcom as Head of Research and Development and Senior Technologist in 2003. Here he manages a team providing technical advice and performing research across all areas of Ofcom's regulatory remit. He also leads some of the major reviews conducted by Ofcom including the Spectrum Framework Review, the development of Spectrum Usage Rights and most recently cognitive or white space policy. Previously, William worked for a range of communications consultancies in the UK in the fields of hardware design, computer simulation, propagation modelling, spectrum management and strategy development. William also spent three years providing strategic management across Motorola's entire communications portfolio, based in Chicago,

William has published ten books, eighty papers, and four patents. He is a Visiting Professor at Surrey University and DeMontfort University and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE and the IET where he is as a Vice President. His biography is included in multiple "Who's Who" publications around the world. William has a first class honours degree in electronics, a PhD and an MBA. He is a keen cyclist who has completed the Tour de France and most recently the "worlds toughest cyclosportive" - the Cent Cols Challenge.

This book is about the Weightless standard for low power, low cost and long range machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. It begins describing the issues and key points for deploying a Internet of Things standard which will allow remote sensors to communicate with base stations kilometers away and them to servers around the world. It explains why actual telecom technology designed for connecting people is not suitable for M2M applications. Weightless will operate in the white space spectrum, a radio spectrum previously occupied by analog broadcast television. Signals in this spectrum have a lot of range and the ability to go through walls. The author describes the regulation of white space spectrum and how it could be used to deploy Internet of Things all over the world. It explains in a clear way the network design its MAC and physical layers. Finally, Weightless SIG is promising a $2 chip able to run for 10 years on a AA battery communicating to a Weightless base station 10km away. If you are interested in large scale, low power and long range wireless sensor networks that transmit just a few kilobytes as smart metering, precision agriculture, industrial automation and environmental monitoring, you should read this book.
