"This highly readable introduction is extremely valuable. I'm delighted William Webb has taken on this task. William is well known for his ability to express complex ideas in a clear and concise manner and as lead designer of the Weightless standard is ideally placed to write the definitive guide. This book is essential reading for anyone who is interested in machine communications and the Weightless standard. I thoroughly commend it." - Tim Whitley, Managing Director, Research and Technology, BT Innovate & Design

"The telecoms industry has been successful in connecting most of the people in the world. Now it is time to connect many of the "things" in the world. The Internet of Things is an important enabler to a better world, Weightless is likely to be a key component of this, and Professor Webb's book is an excellent introduction to the technology and more widely the applications and business cases. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to get involved in this exciting area." - Warren East, CEO of ARM

This book is about the Weightless standard for low power, low cost and long range machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. It begins describing the issues and key points for deploying a Internet of Things standard which will allow remote sensors to communicate with base stations kilometers away and them to servers around the world. It explains why actual telecom technology designed for connecting people is not suitable for M2M applications. Weightless will operate in the white space spectrum, a radio spectrum previously occupied by analog broadcast television. Signals in this spectrum have a lot of range and the ability to go through walls. The author describes the regulation of white space spectrum and how it could be used to deploy Internet of Things all over the world. It explains in a clear way the network design its MAC and physical layers. Finally, Weightless SIG is promising a $2 chip able to run for 10 years on a AA battery communicating to a Weightless base station 10km away. If you are interested in large scale, low power and long range wireless sensor networks that transmit just a few kilobytes as smart metering, precision agriculture, industrial automation and environmental monitoring, you should read this book.
