2.0 out of 5 stars Written for the professional
I started writing this review after only reading 14 pages. My initial thoughts were that it read very much like a dissertation or thesis - heavily laden with acronyms (DSM-IV, DSM-III-R... WTF?), tons of references, and sources of information. The back cover states that the book is designed for not only the professional but for (presumably any) "woman who suspects that...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate AD/HD resource for women, August 11, 2004
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
No matter what stage of your life you're in, you will find relevant information to help understand the effect that AD/HD has on you. From college/single life to pregnancy and motherhood, topics like medication, hormonal influence, independence, and sexuality will will help to open the doors of this often misunderstood disorder.

Since women usually have inattentive ADD rather than the typical hyperactive, the authors have, in the beginning of the book, expanded upon the criteria for diagnosing AD/HD in women and have created a symptom inventory check-list tailored for women. I found this to be truly a breath of fresh air as I could really relate to the points presented.

Sections include: Diagnosis of AD/HD In Women, Medical Issues for Women With AD/HD, Non-Medical Treatment for Women with AD/HD, Associated Disorders in Women with AD/HD, Support From the Environment, Life Stages for Women with AD/HD, and issues and Challenges For Women With AD/HD.

This book is a wealth of information and I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars all about women with ADD, May 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
This book is an amazing resource of information about the specific issues of being a woman and having ADD/ADHD. This is the type of book that you would want your husbands, parents, and close friends to read because they will learn so much about you.

This is a great book that opens up traits and characteristics that I always thought were part of my personality.

I have read many of the ADD/ADHD books for adults out on the market and this one is a must have for counselors, teachers, female students, moms- and any female having to struggle with ADD, also a great book for anyone who had contact with women with ADD.

5.0 out of 5 stars True insight into those suffering from AD/HD, February 13, 2003
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
"Understanding Women with AD/HD" is a compilation of articles by various medical professionals. Kathleen Nadeau and Patricia Quinn have taken these articles (many of which they contributed to) and put them into a logical order and format so that it is easy for the non-professional to gain a comprehensive understanding of AD/HD as it relates to women.

Of all the books on AD/HD I have read this one provides most comprehensive coverage while still being highly approachable. Subjects covered include why the DSM-IV diagnosis may be inadequate, a self-assessment, hormonal influences, depression, deprogramming, women's life stages, and other issues relating to women with AD/HD.

Easy to follow, the editors make a complex subject understandable. "Understanding Women with AD/HD" is a highly recommended, authoritative read for anyone desiring an understanding of AD/HD and of particular interest for those whose interest is in the unique problems of women.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Broad View of Many Aspects of AD/HD in Women, December 31, 2004
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
Nadeau and Quinn have assembled a number of clinicians to write on many aspects of AD/HD in women. These issues include hormonal changes, motherhood, and career planning. The book discusses both medication and non-medication treatments in detail. There are chapters on how diagnosis of AD/HD in women, medical issues for women with AD/HD, how to get social and occupational support, and related conditions such as depression. There are useful sections for women at different stages of their lives.

The editors include their own view on the diagnosis of AD/HD in women. they take a much broader view of AD/HD than what is included in the standard DSM diagnostic definitions.

The articles are generally interesting and readable for the general public. The chapters are arranged by topic. This makes it easy for the reader to pick out the subjects that she finds particularly relevant.

The authors discuss proven treatments, but also discuss treatments that have not yet been shown effective in rigorous studies. The book was published in early 2002. Since then there have been new published studies on the effects of hormone replacement on older women.

All in all, the book does a good job of showing the varied experiences of women with AD/HD. Many women weill find themselves described here.

The answer to so many of my questions. For me, as a woman that has just been diagnosed with ADD on my 52nd birthday, this book has been a life saver. A must read for all women who suspect they may have it, think someone they know might have it or has already been diagnosed with it. This is my personal favorite out of all the books on this subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good AD/HD Resource, December 20, 2005
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
When I was first diagnosed as ADHD (emphasis on the "H"), I craved knowledge on the subject. I turned to this book and learned so much. However, true to my inattentiveness, I haven't actually FINISHED reading the book! It's one of those things that comes with so much information I can only absorb it in small doses. So I read the chapters as they become meaningful for me in my journey of coping with ADD. Eventually I'll finish the book. Especially meaningful has been the section of "Women in the Workplace".

I ultimately purchased the book so that I could have the liberty of making notes in the margins and taking the self-assessment test in the front of the book. This book is a good place to start if you're new to the world of AD/HD and how to cope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Understanding Women With AD/HD (Paperback)
This book contains valuable info not easily found elsewhere, for women with ADD / ADHD. EXCELLENT questionaires for evaluation and self-knowledge. Discusses how hormones and hormone changes affect ADD. Also discusses frequently co-existing conditions and treatment strategies, as well as the empowerment that can come with a diagnosis of ADD / ADHD. This book reads like a textbook but is not as heavy as most. moves quickly along and is neatly divided into specific areas of interest.
