About the Author

Leslie Carol Botha, Women's Health Educator, author, publisher, and broadcast journalist is an internationally recognized expert on women’s hormonal health. Botha’s 30 years of research demonstrates how hormone changes/fluctuations in the menstrual cycle affect women’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. Botha is a member of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, and an advisory board member for the Cycles Research Institute.  In 2006, Botha received the Edward R. Dewey Award for her pioneering research on how women’s hormonal fluctuations affect their behaviors.  The award was bestowed by the Foundation for the Study of Cycles. Her research is also featured in a recent book titled: The World According to Cycles- How Recurring Forces Can Predict the Future and Change Your Life by Samuel A. Schreiner, Jr., published by Skyhorse Publishing. Schreiner has noted that Botha is “one of the most prominent twenty-first century natural cycle thinkers.” H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik co-founded Pleiades Publishing Services in 1992. In addition to her work as a Publisher, she joined the Holy Hormones Women’s Menstrual Education Project as Principal Research Analyst in 2002.  Her responsibilities focused on the collation of statistical data, developing reports, publications, and training materials; with a particular emphasis on women’s health, the pharmaceutical industry, and government funded health initiatives. Sandra has conducted over 300 seminars and workshops and has been a featured speaker at national and international publishing conferences. Sandra has earned a reputation for making highly complex subjects easily understood. Her informal approach helps put both readers and class attendees at ease and ready to tackle unfamiliar material. Her many years of research analysis, curricula development and training experience has helped her bring a real-world sensibility to her work with the Holy Hormones Menstrual Health Education Project.

Our connection to nature and natural cycles has been bred out to the point that we are now many generations removed from a connection to the earth. Understanding the menstrual cycle is one way to truly reconnect, but what does that even mean? Where does one turn to seek the language to even understand when so few do, and even fewer teach?

Botha's and Batik's book is an important piece in providing this deep understanding that mankind has lost. I purposefully used the word `mankind' instead of the more androgynous `humankind' or `womankind'; given this is a book about menstrual cycles, because men need to know this information even if their own bodies don't obviously menstruate. In each of us are both masculine and feminine principles and ultimately there is no separation.

Now, it is in 5th grade where girls are separated from the boys in class and taken to watch a film on menstruation. That is how it worked for me and that is how it still seems to work for many school children. I remember asking my male friends what this was all about. I grew up in a more innocent time and in the 1960's most 5th grade boys did not know women menstruate. I had to find the one boy in my class who was precocious in the ways of the world and he told me what the film was about. At first, finding out that girls and women menstruate was strange to me, but almost immediately I became angry, because if the menstrual cycle was part of nature, then it was wrong to hide it away or be secretive about it.

Our body functions, especially those so closely connected to the cycles of nature, are to be honored and revered. They are a road map to understanding the universe we live in and that wisdom is to be celebrated and shared. This book is an important contribution to resurrecting this understanding regardless of gender.

Living in a century replete with high technology and “fast everything,” we tend to forget some basics of life on planet Earth. For example, nature is directly correlated to the human body’s complex design and functions. That’s right. The moon and stars really do affect how we think and act.

In “Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle,” co-authors Leslie Carol Botha and H. Sandra Chevalier-Batik beckon us to understand the intimate relationship between our hormone cycle and its impact on our thoughts and emotions. They explain how we can become empowered by understanding the brain – nervous system connection so we can enhance our personal and professional relationships. Furthermore, we learn how our health can be improved by maintaining a natural hormone cycle to decrease the risk of serious medical conditions including depression, anxiety, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes.

“Understanding Your Mind, Mood, and Hormone Cycle” provides health-related insights for both women and men. This book is well-written, easy to understand, illustrated, and beautifully organized. Kudos to Botha and Chevalier-Batik for researching and writing a great book that explains how to react positively to the constant stress of living in the 21st century.

A healthy menstrual cycle is the 5th vital sign of a woman's health. If a woman is body literate she will be able to learn how to maintain a healthy cycle and benefit--bones, breasts, heart, brain, libido, and mood. Botha's book helps women understand better how to gain body literacy and the critical function of a healthy menstrual cycle to being a healthy, sexy, intelligent woman. I would recommend Botha's book as a companion guide to Justisse Method: Fertility Awareness and Body Literacy A User's Guide (Volume 1) and to understand the social politics of hormonal contraceptives go to Sweetening the Pill: or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control

I am so happy to have the opportunity to sing the praises of this book. Our cycles never end. As long as we live, women cycle through the changes our bodies, hearts and minds go through. Here at last is important information about the connection between these aspects of our lives. It's been a long time coming and a 'must have' for women, young and old.
